Llooll Aammaazzoonn!

From my memory you only saw her legs... with the occasional broom. She spoke like a black person (voice actor was black) and she did maid stuff.

Yup, racist.

EDIT: Did it cross anyones mind, before this thread, that T&J was at all racist?

Well you've not actually taken in what I've said. It's not that she was black, and a maid. Why are you fixating on that? It was the stereotype depicted that is the issue.

I watched Tom and Jerry with my nan growing up and always felt off about the maid.

Warner Bros have been doing this for a while. Their wording is spot on IMO.

Are stereotypes not loosely based on reality though? Are you suggesting if she wasn't black, they'd be a warning for severe stereotyping?

To a kid it's just a black maid. I watched T&J as a kid and never gave a thought to the maid. I didn't like her because she was always horrible to Tom though :D.

Honestly this is just nonsense, making a problem where there isn't one as usual. No one cares and if they do then they must have an amazing life if something as insignificant as this gets them riled up.

But this did happen, I still don't see the issue. Is this not just a true representation of what went on?

I'm not suggesting that they should be edited. I'm pointing out that it's not about

ERMERGERD PC GONE MERD CAN'T EVER SHEW BLECK PERPLE

Which for some reason is how some people are choosing to interpret it as, which says more about them than they realise I think.

I think the image that Tunney posted is a fair way of addressing it as it isn't good or healthy to deny history.

I don't see why the powers that be should feel a warning is needed because:

1) It is a historically correct depiction of how things were. Does this mean we should have racist warnings on films like 12 years a slave, Nelson Mandela etc ?

2) More importantly, I am sure that 99% of kids (or even adults) even thought the maid in T&J was a slave or anything of the kind.....until this piece of news !!!

You're only seeing the colour. Being black is a major component of that stereotype, it wouldn't be a stereotype otherwise.

Stereotypes are loosely based in reality, sure. I'm not even saying it should be changed, I'm highlighting the issue where people can only process the fact that the character was or is black and that it's being called racist.

The point of 12 Years a Slave was to depict that very thing though, to demonstrate what those times were like.

Why am I fixating on the colour? Because it now comes wit ha warning that this could be deemed racist.

It has everything to do with the maid being black.

Yes it's a sterotype. Of a black maid.

I am with others, I thought it was their owner. It's madness.

So as a child, you were aware of such sterotypes, racial issues and the like..

Behave yourself.

Because you didn't, I didn't. Right? Because that's how the world works.

You are fixating on colour at the expense of everything else, in that it's not based solely on the virtue of her being depicted as black that is the issue. Had it just been a black maid without the slavery stereotypes, they wouldn't be giving a warning.

Well what's the target audience? 6-11? If you were really aware of racial sterotypes and racial issues the nfair play.. I was too busy enjoying my childhood and focusing on the actual point of the programme (or lack of one)

No, I get you. But by that token every time their is a black maid on screen it has to come with a warning? It's silly..

EDIT: just realised the pun too.

No because it isn't just about her being black and a maid...

If it was just that she was a black maid there wouldn't be a disclaimer...
