Our NEW MSI GS30 Shadow & GamingDock - Coming soon!

Its a bit niche. I have the GS60 and 15.6" is a great size. the GTX 870m is great in it! And it means i can game on the sofa, and carry it around for LAN stuff. Whereas this is geared towards a power gamer who wants a netbook that doesnt run games.

it'll prob appeal to some people, but sadly, not me! Love the lights on it tho!

I love it!

Cannot wait to get a sample here.

I will do an MSI GS30 day at OCUK when it does so people can see it :)

Such a wonderful creation. So many questions.

I wonder what the real price is when you consider to use this for gaming you need a separate monitor, keyboard, mouse and any other peripherals you might use.

Is this really viable? Can the processor, RAM (1600mhz) and framework on the laptop run the biggest and baddest PC GPU's without performance loss or bottlenecks? I also wonder which I7 they are using?

Also, mentioned earlier and shown in the video (thanks Mikoyan), the dock is pretty sizable and a bit of a block, its really not far off the size of a smaller desktop case. I wonder if they will be reducing the size, changing the shape, sculpting or the docking to address this?

Hey Hey

The CPU with be one of the latest I7 I believe. I do not think bottlenecking will be an issue.

The dock is actually small. If you compare it with the NB which is a 13.3" NB and less than 19mm thick. Basically, what we have to all understand is that....this primarily is a laptop that is ultra portable and has decent Intel Iris Pro graphics on it. For people like me, who want something for the living room and bedroom to NOT game with, but still want the power of playing the latest games after, this is ideal.

Like I say - it's not for everyone, but for students and people like me, it's ideal.

Also for me, I would not game on a NB on something less than 27" - as my eyes are pants. I love my mech KB, and everyone needs a mouse with a laptop anyway.

I like this concept, I can see myself taking this laptop around with me and then docking it in at home when I want some decent grunt to play some games. Gives a bit more freedom and all in one type affair. I do wonder if the GPU unit is capable of SLI or is just a single slot and also any noise insulation built in?

You say this comes as a package however I have a question. Would there be the option to buy further individuals of the docking station?

For my work I do a 10/4 rotation, away for 10 and home for 4. I'd love to have a docking station at home and one at the flat where I stay when I'm away working but I'm not sure there would be that option going by what you've said.

Hi,

It's only available on the GS30 on launch and will come as a bundle for you to choose your own desktop GPU to place inside.

Wow, how on earth is this a remotely practical idea? You have created a dock for one single and specific laptop which is on the small side for most people. When the laptop is fixed on the dock (sorry, but also an awful method of connecting this), you can't even use the built-in mouse and keyboard as it's positioned in completely the wrong way. One can only hope you will have the same connector built into future 15" and 17" laptops so that the GPU housing doesn't end up a dead duck if you ever want to upgrade to another size laptop.

Just to show what the height looks like in normal photos: http://media.pcgamer.com/files/2014/09/MSI-GS30-close.jpg

It looks, again, completely impractical. if you had devised a system whereby the GPU housing could be out of the way and ocnnected via some other wire or cable system then perhaps it would have been worth a look. As it is, it looks like an absolutely awful implementation.
The mind boggles at the kind of thought processes that must go on behind closed doors at MSI HQ.

PS: Please stop calling people trolls. You embarassed yourself before in your spats with the Gigabyte rep, and you're kind of doing the same thing now with the unprofessional memes criticizing forum users who have opinions.

Hi there!

Yes, further docking stations will be available to purchase for sure.

On release, I believe that it will come bundled with the GS30, but other docking stations will be available to buy separately.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback Richdog.

I will pass this back on to HQ about possible future improvements.

I don't think people have a problem with the *idea* of this, just the actual implementation is a bit clunky.

Other manufacturers have done "big" docks that have e.g. PCI expansion slots, and they look a lot more elegant e.g.

Google IBM Thinkpad Dock II or Dell PD01X to see what I mean - these are both "proper" docking stations with a desktop expansion slot.

Hi Armageus

Totally understand.

I think the best thing for me to do is to invite people to use it once I have a sample.

I will take it into OCUK and invite anyone who wants to see this.

I think the final unit will be allot nicer, as the one displayed in all the pictures was not the final design.

Many thanks

I think this looks like a great idea in principle, but I wonder why desktop GPU's? Could it not use 2 MXM cards with vastly improved cooling?( I assume mobile nvidia cards can do SLi) - this would probably result in something significantly smaller - possibly fitting the footprint of the laptop itself.

At present it looks about the size of a shuttle PC.

Price would be good to know though.

Yes, nvidia do have mobile sli already in some laptops.I would be happy with a 980m in a small package to allow easy transportation.
I am hoping the current photos are just prototypes and final release may look a bit more polished (and smaller)

Thanks mate, could be just what I am after Then if the dock improves its look on release

Hi Ninja

I am sure you will like it when it's released.

The dock itself may not be everyone's cup of tea, but this unit is going to be great for professionals and students who want a powerful NB during the day for work etc but want to play games when at home.

The dock may not be as nice as everyone says, but it serves a very good function with ports for an external monitor and many usb's.

The main aim is for someone who wants an everyday laptop that has longer battery life, but does not want to compromise on the fun.

When I get a sample, I would be more than happy to showcase you this at OCUK at a time convenient for you (if you are local).
