Some of those are crazy cheap  Is there something I'm missing or could I really get a power meter for £240?

The couple I looked at all said:

PLEASE NOTE - ONLY SELECTED MODELS IN STOCK. STOCK DUE END OF JUNE TO EARLY JULY. PLEASE CONTACT FOR DETAILS.

They show as In Stock, but none of the delivery options are available.

I'm a bit sceptical.

Got myself a roadie! My first one! I bought a cheap mtb last year (dual sus, urgh) and barely rode it anywhere as after two weeks it broke. I got it fixed in April. Rode it for a month and then it broke again so I bought a decent bike, my Trek Marlin 6 29er, 2015 model. Done around 900kms on that now, got a lot of kit along the way and now I've just purchased my roadie, Giant Defy 3, again the 2015 model.

Genuinely very hard to get used to and because of that I'm reluctant to ride it in the rain, honestly If I feel damp air I won't even go near it. Only used it 3 times :( hoping to get on it for my commute to work tomorrow evening.. Anyone got any advice? I've been looking up the dos and donts as I don't wana come off again, came off the 29er at just under 30mph about 6-8 weeks ago and sustained a sprained shoulder so I really don't want to risk hurting myself again/more.

What tyres do you have? A decent set of tyres make a world of difference in the wet and those would be the first thing I replace on a new bike.

Pffft, on my 29er my Speedo is a good 3-5kmph out :(

Have you calibrated it?

*good advice on stuff to check regularly*

Frankly the idea of paying someone good money to do any of the above (gear adjustment is the only one that takes any skill at all) on a regular basis or after a set number of miles is madness.

When I first got into cycling I had three free (basic) services with my LBS. This was really handy but it meant that it took a long time for me to bother learning the kind of maintenance skills that I should've been working on from the outset.

I definitely agree that you shouldn't be paying people to do servicing for you for the most part. It can be a little daunting at first but it's worth persevering.

Hmm... Looking into it further I tend to agree.

They do take PayPal though so I guess if you buy with that you are fairly well protected.

Learning bike maintenance is an easy thing to do with plenty of resources on the web, you'll save yourself loads of money.

Tempted by those powermeters but I don't really need one...

This.

I think I've taken my bike to a LBS twice in total. Once to fix my Campagnolo shifter. £60. Bang. The shifter started playing up again recently. I spent £9 on parts and did it myself. It was enjoyable, and I have learnt something, and it took two hours as opposed to waiting 4 days for the repair.

Most bike maintenance can be done with simple tools. And if you don't know how to do something, the internet tells you. Everything you could ever want to know is on the internet. Saves a shed load of money and means that you don't end up waiting weeks for simple jobs.

It may seem daunting. My mate's default state when something does wrong is "take it to the LBS". When in reality he could do it himself.

Some jobs like BB and headset replacement can require some expensive tools for something you may do once a year. But you will slowly build up an arsenal of tools to a point where you can pretty much do anything by yourself.

and another crash.. amazing! same part of the cycle path, in wet again! this time I've contacted mayor of london to see if this can be sorted out.

as far as injuries go.. bloody knee, leg and ankle.. oh and skewer got messed up, pedal scratched to hell, bar tape gone, shift lever scratched too.. :(

Totally agree, the only problem I've had with my roadie is with the gear alignment... It was adjusted 2 days after I bought it (Halfords) and then again at the 6 weeks service. Both times I had to tweak my limit screws afterwards to smooth it and stop chain rub. Took it to a LBS and paid to 'fix' it and 2 free followup visits and it was back to how I had adjusted it myself after Halfords (chain rubbing), guy said he couldn't fix it (and refunded half of what I'd paid). 6 month visit to Halfords and I again had to adjust things afterwards to even find my top gear and stop the worst of the rubbing.

I'm at a loss, but it was a cheap bike. I've spent 30+ hours trying to get it right with all the guides everywhere online and drawn a blank. I've had 3 different guys look at it (LBS & Halfords). I'm convinced whoever built it got something wrong with the front derailer but the guy at the LBS didn't adjust it and Halfords say it's correct. I can't find enough good information online about how to remove and reassemble the derailer so I'm leaving it now it's 90% working (spent too much time and money on it already) and I know I'll be replacing the bike next year so someone else can have the problem! ;)

If I keep it much longer than March I'll be taking it to one of the bigger 'professional' LBS to me (I have 6 LBS!) but I know it'll cost me £50+ per hour... And is my £300 bike really worth it?! ;)

TLDR;

Do your own maintenance, don't be afraid to try things, but be ready to spend money to sort things you can't sort yourself (or things you mess up yourself lol)!:cool:

I stupidly put a bid on what is probably a KK R M 1? after I told myself not to spend any more money on cycling until after pay day... Doh! Fingers crossed I don't win it, not totally awful if I do as my price wasn't too generous lol... Buying from a seller with 1 rep too, gah!

Thankfully missed this, it went for £191 +£25 postage!

Not even a fluid trainer (I don't think?)!

Got to be careful out there!

What happened exactly?

so the red bit is the thing that literally pulls the front wheel from under your bike, the ribs are in the wrong direction and when it gets wet it's like an ice rink! but that's not the worst bit!

as soon as you get off that bit you've got the blue bit, which is some random brick surface that turns into an even worse icerink as soon as you hit it!

my front wheel just slipped out from under the bike at 20mph + and that was it.. :/

twice I've crashed there now! I normally avoid it in wet completely.. but today a truck was literally tail-gating me so I just got on the cycle path for my own safety(year right)

Guess who's back, back again.....

Lost my previous password which was associated to an email address I don't have any more so I had to re-register.

Been crashing have we? Me too.

Wet manhole cover last Wednesday, washed out my front wheel and went down hard. No damage to helmet, scratched rear mech, ripped bar tape and four stitches required in my arm.

Tis' but a flesh wound.

Oh, and having been let down on the Charge Plug (brake calipers needed taking off and sending back to Sram with no eta for replacement) I've ordered a Canyon Inflite 9.0.

Yummy.

^It's a shame but it felt like Schleck never reached his potential through a combination of attitude and, latterly, injury. He was a big time moaner and you get the impression he would get off the bike when others would ride on.

That was a fluid trainer. The Road Machine and Rock n Roll are fluid, the Cyclone is wind and the Magnetic is magnetic (surprisingly).

that sucks, what did the admins say about your account? is there no way of getting it back? if you managed to prove that it is you, they should be able to change the email address.. or was this their solution?

unlucky on the crash too! those manhole covers are killer in wet! that's why I take massive care in wet when riding over/near them.. but crap like the above still happens

It's worth asking a mod/admin, I had the same problem but was able to retrieve my account a few years back.

Ouch @ crash! Flesh will heal but a knock like that on mech & bars! Self fixable mech?

You had several issues with the Charge, weren't you getting that after being let down on another?!

Schleck was very vocal about everything, fun to watch his rants ;)

Still a big loss as a great supporting rider... :(

Still, £200+ on a second hand machine from an ebay user with only 1 feedback... I was stupid bidding on it really lol ;)

The Elite-crono-hydro-mag-elastogel-trainer, Elite-supercrono-power-fluid-elastogel-trainer-2013 and Elite-supercrono-digital-mag-elastogel-trainer-2013-1/ are all similar/cheaper for a brand new trainer (minus riser and DVD)...
