Russian Grand Prix 2014, Sochi - Race 16/19

Wasn't the free engines the last few years just part of the buy back of shares they had in the team. Rather than give them x million back they got engines for free, iirc?

Quite possibly. There is no free engine deal this year though. McLaren are just a Mercedes engine customer this year, just like Williams and Force India.

What? BMW Sauber Ferrari in 2010 had absolutely no connection with BMW.

Did I contradict that?
The entry went in as BMW and peter suaber did not request a name change in time fir the final entry list. That is why it was BMW in the name. No other reason other than the timings of entry lists, sale time etc. and it wasn't BMW sauber Ferrari, it was BMW sauber.

Which is totally different to Mclaren Mercedes,
Lotus f1 is also totally differnt to Mclaren Mercedes. That's just their name, which they have rights to.
If Mclaren have no reason to have the Mercedes name in their title, then they are bigger idiots than I thought. That is a huge amount of real estate, which you think their is no reason for them to have.

Well it certainly sounded like you contradicted it when Millwall said they were part owners in 2010, I replied 'they had nothing to do with the team in 2010' and you responded 'They did'. Not hard to see why Skeeter thought you were contradicting my comment :p

You are correct in that the name remained only due to Peter Saubers failure to change it in time, however the constructor was "BMW Sauber-Ferrari", with a team name of BMW Sauber F1 Team.

Did you nit read all my comment, I don't see how you could think I contradicted it. We've gone over this constructor means nothing, team name is the important part.

Well the bit that seems to have confused me is where I said they didn't have anything to do with the 2010 team and you said they did.

If you didn't actually mean that they did, then saying 'They did' is probably not the clearest way of putting your point across. I have better things to do with my evening than continue to indulge your tediousness though, so i'll leave it to Skeeter to pulverise his skull against this particular brick wall.

Yeah and were wrong, on top of that I had naming of teams right.

But that seems more like, at time of entering that it was enterd as BMW dauber and it was changed in time, and then 2011 they removed bwm name, which isn't what is happening with mclaren. MErecedes aren't owners, they left several years ago from what I can see.

Some one message Ted and find out what's going on. I'm leaning to we are all wrong. There must be a reason Mercedes is in the name, you don't give that up for nothing.

Of teams or constructors? Sponsor names are never in the constructor name. Its chassis and engine manufacturer only. All sponsorship is at the team level.

Is there any reason the teams don't negotiate a more sensible dealoover naming conventions, all this bickering has thrown up some obvious examples of pretty silly team names used because of the contract when logic would be for them to be called something different. The BMW sauber Ferrari thing makes no sense for either manufacturer really. Is this just another case where logic goes out the window 'because FOM/bernie' or 'because fia'.

I expect there's lots of things going on, contracts, financial agreements and things. I can understand why there are deadlines,.etc, but I agree the restriction on naming teams is a bit stupid, and needlessly so.

Probably a legacy thing.
