New consoles have NOT brought increased quality.

What new consoles have brought is an abundance of physical memory in which developers can be lazy.

VRAM requirements on PC have increased as a result of console developed games munching a known quantity of physical memory in the system without a care for optimisation or efficiency.

3GB of VRAM is enough. However, if you want to pay for VRAM you should not need just to play shoddy console games then go for it!
 
I hate all this talk about lazy game developers. I am pretty sure it isn't easy to develop games with the level of detail we see today and calling a group of people lazy when they have probably worked there asses off during the development cycle is a tad harsh. Possibly the games could be tweaked more to run on lesser hardware, this would also mean more work causing possible delays for PC versions of games.

If anything, I would say the last two big releases I have played (Shadow Of Mordor and Alien Isolation) run pretty well for how good they look.
