Krav Maga

Nothing more simple and effective than pressing your thumbs into someones eyes and biting their ear off. I should start a DoJo.

Grand Celestial Do is where it's at nowadays. Got to be prepared for when ET attacks.

I'll echo one of the earlier posters (who got flamed a bit) and point out that Judo or Boxing are excellent for self defence and you'll likely gain much more from them. Frankly if someone pulls a knife on you the best techniques you can use are the handing over your wallet technique or the run away very fast technique.

Quality control is a big issue in arts where people don't train at full resistance - plenty of dubious instructors out there in Mc Dojos type schools teaching dubious knife defences, dubious techniques only ever practiced through robotic one step sparring (cos their super ninja Israeli techniques are too deadly etc etc...) On the other hand you're unlikely to find Judo or boxing taught badly - if something doesn't work there you'll find out pretty quickly when you get dumped on your back or smacked around the head by a fully resisting opponent.

We are trained always to make contact in Krav, obviously with pads people go full whack and some restraint is shown when there are no pads, in addition we have monthly fight club which is full contact with protection. And yes we are also taught if someone tries to take your wallet to give your wallet not to be a hero, the training is more based on worse case scenario.

As with what others have said. The only way to learn how to fight...is to fight. That doesn't mean you have to beat the hell out of each other every class but some sparring should be included every time you train (more or less). The style doesn't matter too much although there are clearly some which are more effective than others.

IMO the best arts to train for self defence are Boxing, MMA and Muay Thai/kickboxing and to some extent Judo and BJJ. The main reason being that everything is pressure tested. If it doesn't work, you'll feel it.

Do they help with knife/gun defence? No, but realistic and effective training for this doesn't really exist.

Most classes that are sold as "self defence" are absolutely useless for defending yourself.

Got to love the self defence against a gun ones. You can have all the training in the world but most people are going to **** themselves and run if someone whips a glock on you. Fight or flight and most people flight.

I'll admit the ones with knives can be handy as the attacker would have to get within arms reach and here's where you can take control of the situation but it's entirely different being in a real situation and a classroom lesson.

Just like anything you're going to need real experience to learn how to properly deal with a situation in the real world.

The ability to talk your way out of a situation is above any kind of martial art most of the time.

As stated, all Krav classes have sparring, usually 75% of the class will be done with a partner.

Sorry it looked like I was replying to you, I wasn't. I was just sticking my nose in generally.

But in reply to the above, training with a partner does not equal sparring (I may have misinterpreted what you were trying to say though).

Appreciate that, we do have fight club once a month that is purely sparring, sparring in class will be determined by what we are learning.

I'm not sure they all do... there is a big difference between working with a partner and sparring. If you do have a class that involves some sparring at full contact then that is good... though AFAIK there are plenty of other classes out there that don't do that but rather engage in the one step sparing/play acting type scenarios and maybe some light sparing at best.

We spar with 16oz gloves, gum shields and shin guards. Go as hard as you feel comfy with (Krav class).

It resembles boxing/muay thai I guess.

nothing a sniper rifle wouldn't sort out, but I suppose he can doge bullets too?

or by the time you finish your training, you wont have to?

I am sure the cross fit clones will love transferring over to this
