Well guys, the usual 'scaremongering' headlines are out there on the major news sites and papers - 'We're going to have the worst winter in 100 years' etc.

So, place your bets now! Do you reckon it'll be a cold one? A dull, wet one with no real cold? Something like 2011 where you couldn't drive anywhere for 6 weeks?

An insight from the OcUK weather experts would be good too... :p

Call me a complete moron ( many people have lol) but I'm guessing this winter will be a cold one. Yes I know it sounds nuts, but apparently, every winter is cold and this has been the case for billions of years. I know ! Crazy isn't it ! Who'd have thought it ? Winters are cold ! Well bugger me and call me Susan.

Ok Susan

I'm predicting another mild boring winter with no snow.

Well bugger me and call me Susan.

Hi Susan! I'm gonna need your address for the first part though!

As for weather, yeah. It will be winter. Winter is cold. We as a nation are pretty useless at dealing with weather changes. I don't mind heavy snow etc to be honest, mostly because I always travel (when weather is supposed to be bad) with food, water, grit, blanket etc, so am ready if it gets bad.

I predict that the winter will be average.

I see the Daily Express did the same last year with silly predictions that didn't come to fruition.

Isn't new research showing it's largely down to the jet stream which we can't predict.
And daily express and others should never be believed. They use a dodgy predictor who always says it's extreme to make money and such newspapers use it to sale papers.

I hope it's heavy snow. Heavy snow is great. Place is so peaceful, people are happier, random snow statues.

Well Susan, I thought it was fairly obvious from the post that I meant comparatively - the winter of '10 and '11 was very cold, whereas last year I think I saw about 3 **********.

Also, vote to change this guy's name to Susan? :D

I hear that!!

Last time it snowed, someone made an easter island head on a roundabout down the road from me.

I'm going with whatever she says...

Holy side boob :o

Apparently the weather centers are predicting a possible colder than average winter, but as usual, these are all rough estimates of possible scenarios months from now which are largely driven by local dynamic weather patterns rather than mean average distributions. Ipso Facto; Weather is hard.

There are some positive signs however that UK weather may be less dominated by zonal conditions this year due to the negative NAO (which means less warm wet westerlies, and more blocking and cold dry easterlies). I'm in two minds about it considering I'm driving across the country after recently just passed my test for Christmas, so i'm hoping for a uneventful winter until January please.

They always run stories like this on the chance it happens as they can say "WE TOLD YOU!!"

I guess we could be in for a bad one as we have not had a BAD winter for years.... by bad i mean prolonged month after month of sub zero and arctic winds/snow.

Remember the mid 80's ( all you old farts ) i remember sledging in 8ft snow drifts and weeks of snow :p
