ISIS and Islamic militants - discussion

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me why the wording of the motion is inappropriate. Amnesia seems to have suffered a meltdown thinking about it so maybe you can help?

why don't you ask those who have said they are inappropriate ?

i doubt many(here) have read it or care to read it....i was explaining something to you because you seemed unable to grasp it ...you could have just said thanks like a normal person would have.

because you quoted that as if it disproved his point when it really didn't.

i quoted the two parts because one gave a reason as to what they plan on doing and the other was why there were going to do it.

it was more of a clarification as they had postponed their condemning not refused to do it outright.

Phillip Hammond, the UK Foreign Minister suggests that treason charges could be brought against anyone who swears allegiance to Islamic State. I don't believe for one second that he's serious and we'll actually see any sort of tough action against Islamic extremism in this country, but I remember calling for treason charges over a decade ago when the threat of Islamic extremism in this country became apparent.

Hope this goes ahead, would be interesting for the government to do something the majority of the population support :D

I guess my point is that it's a bit poisonous to just call out Islamic extremism. A lot of people are already conflating Islam with extremism anyway (this thread is a case in point).

Then why not word it as something like "Allegiance to any organisation that threatens the lives of any member of the state/commonwealth/kingdom [delete as necessary]" is what I mean. Bored of "Islamic Extremism." Just call it for what it is ... Extremism. Tacking the word "Islamic" in front of it is just a ploy to arouse those with a bigoted undertone, like The Sun readers.

Why explicitly Islamic extremism and not just any kind of terrorism?

My view is that it's to do with the level of threat - in terms of capability, support and financing. Whether we recognise them or not it's a fact that there is a now a country called Islamic State with significant resources and they are at war with us. Islamic extremism is now an existential threat to the UK and indeed all civilized nations, it'd be good to see this is finally being recognised by the establishment.

Perhaps calling it Islamic extremism will drive it home to Muslim communities in this country that there is a problem that exists within their communities which they need to recognise. Of course, it's unrealistic to expect that to actually happen, what will happen instead if cries of "OMG Britain is oppressing us Muslims again".

You mean those same communities that have already condemned IS and affiliates?

What are you expecting them to do? There isn't much else to do. Not without breaking the law.

A bloke from the Muslim Council of Britain was on Sky this morning.

He said every time a muslim is arrested for suspected terrorism it doesn't help and only makes muslims feel demonised.

I suppose then the police should just leave them to it and not try and catch any muslims.

Words are meaningless, I'm not sure that people like the MCB are really spokespeople for these communities. That said, the penny does seem to be dropping in those communities which is why we're getting parents telling the police if they suspect their kids are about to go off to Islamic State, however that doesn't mean the job is done - there's still plenty to do before the problem is resolved.

What am I expecting Britain's Muslim communities to do? Drive out Islamic extremism from their communities like the people of east London drove out the Blackshirt fascist movement from their community.

Quite agree.

Saw this the other day and the interviewers just totally miss the point massively.
