Krav Maga

We spar with 16oz gloves, gum shields and shin guards. Go as hard as you feel comfy with (Krav class).

It resembles boxing/muay thai I guess.

it probably would - they're pretty much the most effective when it comes to striking... thus you'll find in MMA type events these days people won't bother trying karate etc.. style punching - it simply doesn't work anywhere near as well.

no hate at all matey, anything that gets people out and about, training etc is all good for me.

the joke for me, is that here we are with another fitness/ fighting technique, just ready for the fad exercise clan to jump on,

I am pretty sure by the end of the year, you will be complaining that the sport has been taken over by guys in beards, with thick rimmed glasses, tattoos and red chinos.

I'm may switch from muay thai to this. I like the fighting but the fitness side of muay thai is getting to much for me (42yrs) and I'm not training for fights etc

Plus I am a average height with little legs and get my backside handed to me regularly

The poster who mentioned karate as being no good is talking about 'sport' karate which is mostly taught now a days.
Check out Iain Abernathy on you tube he teaches more realistic karate

I've done taekwondo, Muay Thai and a bit of judo but I'd love to get into krav maga as well. Just finding the time is difficult:(. You'll only get out what you put into it.

All this balls about x martial art doesn't work. It's all down to the person.

Any good MA that I could attend where I can keep the face safe? Apart from being dashingly handsome () I also have braces that I don't want a solid punch to...

Headgear or mouth guard would be fine.

I had a mouth guard designed for braces that stopped the braces ending up in my cheek :).

Edit: "shock doctor double". Worked fine for me.

Ah, that sounds good. Hopefully the headgear will protect my jew nose...

Lol I have the whole Jew nose going on :(. Two things one don't get hit, two I'm sure the size of the nose directly relates to how easy it breaks lol. Never had a busted nose(other than when I was 5) I'm sure it's the extra padding from the nose :D.

You can legally defend yourself to the point of killing someone in this country, it has been this way for a long long long time.

It's complicated.

If someone attacked me (no martial arts training) with a knife and in the scuffle I disarmed them and the knife ended up in their chest, killing them, I may get away with it.

Substitute me with someone that has years of training, KM for example, and they'd probably end-up behind bars.

The courts would expect someone with training to know their stuff and show restraint. Power is nothing without control.

Whilst I think Krav Maga is great it is interesting that if someone posts a video of someone doing it in a highly choreographed display then the collective response is "that's awesome" and yet if someone posted an Aikido thread and did the same everyone would be all "lol". Same technique, same choreography - one accepted and the other not.

Hmm it's one heck of a grey area.

The thing is it doesn't really matter how much training you've had in fantasy scenarios once you come across someone who pulls a knife and appears intent on using it you enter the "o ****" mode where it's fight or flight.

I doubt many people go from training in a martial art where there's very little chance of getting killed to facing a real life scenario and start thinking "it's fine I'll just do xyz".

Krav trains you to do what you need to do then get out, stabbing someone with a knife you have disarmed from is most certainly not in the training. Kicking the knife away, getting as much distance between you and the knife is what is trained.

The objection is valid in either case IMHO.

I agree Dowie I just find it interesting how readily people will jump on the bandwagon or another one that makes me laugh is how they'll dismiss something because MMA fighters don't use it as if in a ring and on a street are identical. I'd rather have a baseball bat than any martial arts course and tbh I'd rather stop at home these days and avoid the potential of the Friday night fight at the taxi rank on Broad St fullstop!

But they are exactly the same and my art is better than your art! :D

I must admit I've always found it sad. I bet I could wipe the floor with some Krav Maga guys just like a lot of others could do the same with me. I still think it's the artist not the art.
