Info on Paris please

Agreed. I live 25 minutes train ride from London (Waterloo) and visited Paris far more, until the bloody Eurostar terminal moved to St. Pancras.

A bit of research based on what you and the missus actually enjoy, Tripadvisor and just a basic google search will help you make the most of your time there.

It's a dump, go somewhere else such as Barcelona, Madrid or Amsterdam. The German cities are fun too.

Barcelona?

I have always wanted to go to Barcelona, i went before i went to Paris. My honest opinion. it's more of a dump than i thought it'd be. It's what i'd call an unorganised city, there's no 'flow' to it. As i drove too, i saw the shanty towns on the outskirts on the hills not too dissimilar to Rio De Janiero, lots more Africans selling dodgy handbags and Barcelona football teeshirts. The shopping experience was poor imo. It's not easy to get round, (well it is as the metro is quite vast - too vast tbh).

In all honesty, i never saw a lot of BCN and would probably go again to see the parts i didn't see, it's a large city. But i found Paris much better and cleaner (but more expensive), and if i had to choose to visit one or the other it would have to be Paris, there's much more to see and do.

When i travelled across 13 cities in Europe i can confirm Paris came very much bottom of the list. Overpriced, ugly, unfreindly and unsafe.

and in reply to the above ^, Barcelona is 10x better than Paris though i agree it's quite vast, which gives a nice relaxed feel to it, but also means a few metro trips each day.

I was in Paris last week for the Paris Motor show, I stayed in a nice two star hotel near the Convention metro station in one of the outer parts of central Paris. Felt safe walking around at night even though surrounded by large hi rise apartments, wouldn't dream of walking around London in a similar area.

I've always found the complete opposite everywhere in France. I live there at the moment, and speak decent French, but as soon as people hear an English accent they're absolutely desperate to show off their English. My local shopkeeper completely refuses to speak to me in French and delays me every morning constantly talking to me in English. :p

We once had to leave a restaurant in Paris due to this. My wife speaks fluent French and lived in Paris for 10 years when she was growing up. Would the waiter talk to us (well, her) in French? No, he insisted on trying to speak fairly bad English at her. This did not go down well. He didn't care. Wife got angry. Waiter got angry. Both of them refused to speak in their native tongues. !~ DRAMA ~!

I had to virtually drag her out of the place, and it was a really, really nice place too :/

I suspect you did those 13 cities on a budget and briefly?

I've been twice. The first time was on a similar budge to the OP, the 2nd was admittedly on a budget, but we still ate at restaurants etc.

I do think that Paris on no budget would be better as you'd just shop in the high end mall's. However, unless you're spending k's you're still going to the same "famous" run down tourist spots. The dusty parks won't change and the lack of hospitality from Parisians won't change either.

Even on a high budget, it's never nice to know that money is going on over inflated pricing. It makes London look cheap in comparison.
