United States Grand Prix 2014, Austin - Race 17/19

Good tweet to crofty by someone, did anyone miss Caterham or Marussia today, nope, boring drivers that get in the way, are way off the pace and like I've said, they cause more problems with safety cars and other things than they ever actually provide good racing for us to watch. Didn't miss them in the slightest.

A few weeks ago everyone was ****-a-hoop that Marussia scored their first points.

What happened to Maldonado's 5 second penalty applied post race?

That will include it, Maldonado finished ahead of him, he was only behind due to his penalty but with Vergne also getting a 5 second it pushes him behind Maldonado. It was nice to see the Lotus look semi drivable till Grosjean got his front wing damage.

Personally I think Vergne should have got a worse penalty, he didn't directly hit Kyvat and it was insanely unlucky that the piece of wing Vergne damaged on Grosjeans car came off at the time it did to ruin Kyvat's race but it was ultimately his fault. He also for me hit a car then ran him off the road afterwards, two offences.

I think a penalty harsh enough to basically give the place back to Grosjean, who without the damage would likely have finished very close to Maldonado.

Realistically that isn't on the cards. The delay is going to be Lewis holding out in order to use the WDC in his negotiations.

Just noticed that if Mercedes win the next two races - as we must suspect they will - they will take the record for most race wins in a season (although not the highest percentage, that'll stay with McLaren's showing in '88).

I would lol if Rosberg wins the WDC now, just to watch all these hamilton fan boys go into meltdown.

I would laugh at them, possibly non-stop for a good few weeks, but it's hard to argue anyone but Hamilton deserves it. If Rosberg has a couple of storming races and goes out and wins it for himself, fair enough, but as things stand, there's only one guy who deserves it.

Though I do think Hamilton's moves on Rosberg are a little on the robust side on the few occasions they've been wheel to wheel. Rosberg would have had every right to keep his wheels within the confines of the race track and turn Hamilton around here, and at Bahrain too. Of course that right was cancelled out at Spa (while I thought Hamilton too was a bit on the harsh side there, it was Rosberg's fault there was contact).

Well no. If Nico wins the WDC fair and square I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. I wouldn't.

Most Hammy fans with a modicum of sense will accept it. It is what it is.

The rule is stupid but nothing you can do about it. There is always next year.

So let me get this straight... You want to be smug about your 'prediction' that Hamilton would win the WDC, that you made after the absolute dominance of the Merc had become more than apparent and Hamilton had just won 4 races on the bounce?

Picking the stronger of two drivers, in equal machinary, in a 2-horse race? It's hardly Mystic Meg stuff is it?

*Edit* Just noticed you sat on the fence yourself. Consider yourself in negative smugness!

I'd be more disgusted at the farce it would make of the season than annoyed at Hamilton losing. It'll just extend the number of seasons on a trot where it hasn't been won by the best driver :p

TBH it doesn't strengthen his hand, they already know he's far better than Rosberg. They also know they have him by the balls. If you was in charge of the negotiations with Alonso sat waiting in the wings they can offer him the same as Rosberg and he either signs it or goes back to mclaren. When you have a car that's the absolute class of the field they hold all the cards when there are drivers available. They will even point to the fact that even without him Rosberg would have won the title anyway by a mile.

I don't see him going anywhere but they really have no need to increase wages either.

Indeed. Whilst the draw of being a world champion is what drives these guys, i'm not sure I would want to win with 5 wins to my team mates 11 and win solely because my teammates car broke and because of the introduction of the most stupid F1 rule ever.

I don't think for a second Rosberg would drop back though..

Just a reminder here that Keke Rosberg won the 1982 WDC by winning only a single race, so it runs in the family.

Then there was 1987, where Piquet won the title despite winning only three races to Mansell's six.
