I've held several fact finding meetings, on occasion those being interviewed would refuse to sign the minutes, fair enough. I would note on the minutes "staff member refused to sign" and get it counter signed/dated/timed by the minute taker instead.

That would only work if the minute taker was completely unbiased though.

I think this is one of these things that will depend on how well you do your job etc
ie if they want you out, you're gone
if they're just doing something so they're seen to be doing something you'll get a warning

Yes and no. If the investigation somehow related to the manager then he/she would usually arrange a peer to conduct the investigation. However more than often circumstances dictate that it would be appropriate for the manager to conduct the meeting, he may have an opinion. But the point of the investigation is to establish the facts concerned and accurately record the questions and responses given. Don't forget you will almost certainly have to run everything past HR (including questions asked).

We did allow staff to be accompanied by a person of their choice or union rep at this stage, I don't think it's legally entitled but our HR certainly deemed it best practice.

Assuming you looked at the company policy on use of staff discount - either before you used it or whilst this was going on - what does it say about your situation?

If it doesn't say anything about these circumstances then any disciplinary action is not reasonable.

If it does, and you didn't know, well frankly ignorance is not a defence and you should have checked the policy before using the discount. However if it is error rather than deliberate fraud then it would be churlish of them to dismiss you for it.

Not sure which company he works for but if it is who I think then:

"The following exclusions apply:

-Online sales
-Sales days
-Gift vouchers
-Stock clearance
...
"

If you didn't realise what you were doing is wrong then you're too dumb to have the job anyway.

I've never seen a staff discount scheme that let you buy anything for people other than yourself unless it's an actual gift for someone (e.g. not to pay back a debt). I'd say buying a gift card and then using that discounted gift card with your discount to buy stuff for someone else would fall foul of even the most bare bones discount policy.

Most of the highstreet chains let you use staff discount for family members, some have restrictions on "big ticket" items where you can either only buy for yourself or for someone living at the same address.

Yeah sorry, I meant to include immediate family in that one. The rules are basically written to stop you buying stuff for your mates and profiting from the schemes which are usually quite generous.

wow, op is spectacularly dense to not realise he was abusing the system.

That initial meeting without notice or opportunity to bring someone in sounds sus, though.

While it's not theft because the company agreed to sell the products at that price, it's an obvious abuse of the system and I wouldn't be surprised if you were fired.

If you'd done the 20%*20%*20%*20% trick enough times you would have accumulated enough cash to purchase the Company and you could now fire those who are going to dismiss you. You just didn't think big enough.

Only needed to buy a £100 gift card as a base, and applying the discount a further 50 or so times would have seen the OP as a millionaire.

Fail.

Yeah, where is the OP on this? Bit of a waste of reading this thread if the OP has done a runner.

Obviously abusing the system to get 40% discount instead of 20%.

I used to do tons of investigations for retail companies and this seems clear cut to me.

The op story just doesn't hold up.

System is flawed
you got caught abusing it.
