Queen Elizabeth murder plot foiled

Hmmm, why have I found this on the New Zealand news site and nothing on the BBC site?

Probably because although they are reporting it on Breakfast news and mentioning that that has been speculated nothing has been confirmed or released on what the terrorism plot was.

If they reported it in the same way as the linked site then they would be bashed for speculating on unconfirmed information ...

I'm sure some think the same of you.

But they do also bring in a lot of tourist revenue.

They probably contribute more to the economy than anyone here

I'm not saying having a monarchy is a bad thing, I just remember the numbers from the budget last year and how much they cost us!

Personally I'm neither for or against having one but there are obvious benefits.

Needs?

I do see why people question it though. They're just a symbol of the UK and don't actually do anything except consume tax payers money!

The monarchy receives no tax payers money, in fact the Queen gives revenues from the crown estate to the treasury, so it's very much the opposite.

From Wiki:

The Queen received an annual £7.9 million a year from the Civil List between 2001 and 2012. The total income of the Royal Household from the Treasury was always significantly larger than the Civil List because it included additional income such as Grants-in-Aid from the Treasury and revenues from the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster.[5] The total Royal Household income for the financial years 2011-12 and 2012-13 was £30m per annum, followed by a 14% cut in the following year.[6] However, the Treasury provided an additional £1m to pay for Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.[7]

Yes they do. They get tens of millions per year from the sovereign support grant, we pay for the upkeep of palaces, the police foot the bill for their security etc etc. They're estimated to cost us about 300 million per year.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing mind you as i don't know how much money they bring to the country to balance that.

You only have to go to somewhere like Windsor to see how much tourism they bring over. It's always teaming with visitors not to mention the amount of businesses that survive off the back of that.

So what about the areas where there are no royal residences? There's only one within a 200 mile radius from me, and that's 100 miles away. How do they benefit me?

Irrespective of your views on the monarchy surely no-one in their right mind would support the assassination of anyone. Surely if there's anything in these reports we'll have to see treason charges brought?

lol.

However, if this is legit i'm glad it was foiled. I'm hardly a massive monarch supporter, but i'm not anti monarch either.

Also, good luck to 4 lunatics if they think they're getting close enough to the Queen to stab her.
