Brazilian Grand Prix 2014, São Paulo - Race 18/19

Unfreeze engines, Merc come back with even more of an advantage, I can see it now. If there's one thing Merc are good at it's engines. Even their road cars have some proper monsters.

One thing that Wolff said after the race was that they are going to put on the best parts possible for both cars for Abu Dhabi - so everyone can change their parts, ie engine, gearbox etc (while still using existing /used parts) without any penalties for the last race?

The best parts from their remaining allocation I assume, not extra

I think the point he was making is that there is fair dominance, which there was with red bull, and unfair domimance, which he says is what merc will have with an engine freeze.

How do you work that out? Theres only 1 team with Adrian Newey, while there will be 4 teams with Mercedes engines next year.

Are we all talking about the same thing regarding the engine 'freeze'?

From what I understand the engines aren't frozen, and won't be until 2018 or there abouts. Year on year they will have a reduced scope of what can be developed, and a 'token' system for parts they can change. Between 2014 and the start of the 2015 season 92% of the engine is unfrozen, and can be developed, and teams can change up to 46% of the parts within the engine (figures from Ted). Once the 2015 season starts the engines are frozen for that year, until the next round of changes come in in the 2015 to 2016 break.

My understanding is what Ferrari and Renault are pushing for is a mid season upgrade for the engines. So they will be given an additional allowance of tokens that they can use to introduce a range of upgrades in July 2015, rather than having to rush as much in before Feb as they can, and then wait a year before upgrading again.

So the 65BHP Mercedes claim they can find is going to happen anyway over the winter. Renault and Ferrari will also be making updates. Then the engines will be frozen for the 2015 season. Renault and Ferrari want to be able to continue to develop and bring more upgrades in July, but appear to be under some utterly stupid illuson that this wont cost anything () and that Mercedes won't also bring updates ().

Ted said in his notebook that McLaren are bringing a test car to run in Abu Dabhi - this was apparently at the request of their new aero acquisition (what's his name, from Red Bull). It seems that it may be a version of next years car and they may choose to run it in the race. Apparently it's quite a 'different design' from this years.

Will be interesting to see it in action.

Merc has learnt from the last time other's were allowed to make engine improvements. ie making it more reliable that somehow also gave others more power in the process.

but this still implies there is no penalties for swapping out a gearbox (for example) when they have to do x amount of consecutive races

Maybe LH and Rosberg have already, but it was just an interesting comment

I was under the impression the penalties were only applied when parts are swapped out under parc ferme conditions, maybe wrong i dunno.

the crucial word there is "covered" which Rosberg DID do (otherwise Lewis would have won)

We have no way of knowing what would have happened in Brazil IF lewis didn't spin

Rosberg did enough without ruining his tyres, pushing his engine too much or anything else that could have caused a DNF or anything else

Of course pundits are always correct...... :)

At the end of the day Rosberg was faster over every session this weekend, its impossible to know one way or the other

True, Rosberg did just enough and well played to keep Hamilton behind him. However to me Hamilton looked like he had the edge in pace slightly, although not enough to overtake.

I doubt Rosberg's idea of managing the gap was letting Hamilton close up from 7 to 0.5 secs behind him, I imagine he'd have wanted to keep a 1+ sec gap ideally but wasn't quite fast enough.

Maybe he was confident enough that Hamilton wouldn't be able to get past but seems like a risky strategy to voluntarily have Hamilton 0.5 secs behind you with DRS for 10 laps.

Im going to be lazy here.

What points are Hammy and Rosberg on?

What does 1st and 2nd place in abu dhabi get?

Why do people think unfreezing the engines will make any difference, aren't Mercedes also capable of making theirs better or something?

Diminishing returns. Say the Merc engine is at 95% of what is technically perfect. They can only improve 5%. If the others are at 80% they have the chance to improve 20%. Added to that the weaker the engine the easier it is to find performance.

Easy terms...

If Rosberg is 1st, Hammy needs to be 2nd to win the championship.

points will be:

1st: 50 points
2nd: 36 points

Worst ever decision EVER made in F1.

Who the baldest, Lew or Massa?

Never noticed Massa hiding that big bald patch on his crown before, no wonder he always has a hat on :D

Also, Pique? Him and Hamilton not fans of each other?
