iRacing

Bah! Bloody Mosport.

2 races there now and both of them I've sabotaged myself. First time was a half spin out of a clear 4th place. This time was trying to maintain 6th place around the outside of T2 on the first lap, and went straight in to the barrier. Steering was ok, although not great in the right-handers, but lots of aero damage. The car topped out at ~140mph, whereas everyone else was doing ~155. Just about limped home in 9th, positive IR and SR though, so not all bad I guess.

What I'd give for a decent race.

Do you run with auto blip off and give it a massive stab of the throttle on down shift in regard to the C-Spec? I found I gained a few 10ths on my lap times by turning off Autoblip.

I'll give it a go.

CSP V2's came on Wednesday.

Can't really use them at the moment. Even with the brake at it's easiest I can't get 100% braking without the pedals tipping forward, or if I angle them, without pushing me backwards in my chair.

I'm going to mount them on a piece of MDF that I can butT up against the wall and maybe use a chair without wheels until I can talk Mrs Llama into me buying the Obutto.

After I've got them stable enough to use I'll pass on my thoughts.

Did yours come with a tuning kit? My V1's did and it took me a while to get it some I could use them properly. TBH they are a compromise as I would like the brake stiffer. Off the top of my head i use the strongest spring, shortest 'throw bar?' and softest load cell. Of course the v2's may differ. I am on carpeted floor.

No tuning kit.

No instructions. (there is a video)

No driver disk. (download from website)

USB and PS2 cables, oil and 6 screws.

I knew the box contents before I ordered, so it wasn't like I was expecting more than I got.

From the very quick blast I had, I liked the accelerator over the T500 pedals instantly.

The brake will take some practice, but I was within 2-3 tenths of my best lap time at Twin Ring Motegi within 4 or 5 laps.

Any update on the pedals?

Picked up a 2nd place at Mosport after a couple of disastrous runs, I'm never racing on a Saturday afternoon again! Wrecked on both of them, then first thing this morning started 3rd and held 2nd from the start with no incidents.

Pedals have now been hard mounted to a large piece of gloss black coated MDF. There's no way you can use these pedals on carpet, even pushed up against a wall. Up against the wall they tip forward as you brake hard and the foot plate lifts up off the floor.

I've done a practice and qualifying session with them, plus two races. My fastest qualifying time was 0.4 faster than my previous best this week. Not sure if that's the pedals or me just getting better with more track time, I suspect the latter. Both races I started 3rd and finished 3rd

As I said earlier I prefer the accelerator by a good way. It feels like I have more throttle control, even now after I've shortened the throw.

The clutch does feel more like a real one, but I don't think it really adds much over a straight up clutch on the T500 or G25/27 pedals, if I'm honest.

The brake does feel more like a real brake, there's definitely a hydraulic feel to them and it is certainly an improvement over the T500 pedals. Is it enough to warrant £225 over my T500 pedals? Probably not.

If you like a stiff brake feel then you'll probably like them, but even at their lightest it takes a lot of force to achieve full braking. Then there's the fact that because you actually need to physically press the brake harder than a potentiometer based brake, means that it's more of a physical effort to drive the car. It's something I'll probably get used to over time, but at the moment I certainly know when I've been in a race.

Overall I'm happy with them so far.

But I think they are only worth buying if you plan on buying a Fanatec CSW base. If you already have a T500 or G25/27 setup then I'd stick with those until you're ready to upgrade your wheel and pedals.

Can you still get 3 months free?

It's not as good looking as Assetto, but it makes up for it in competition and driving feel (in my opinion) there are plenty of deals to be had on subscriptions too.

Thanks for the reply on the pedals, you confirmed to me it's worth upgrading the wheel at the same time too.

Since the G27 and T500 come with pedals then I don't see enough benefit with the CSP set to justify the extra £225 they cost. But since Fanatec's CSW base doesn't come with pedals then these are the only sensible choice if that's what you are buying.

Well that's the best week of racing I've had.

Clean races all week, only one bad finish for me after spinning by myself.

I've had a lot of races where the guy chasing has been less than a second behind for lap after lap and he hasn't thrown one up the inside and forced the issue. He's waited for an opportunity, that didn't come, so I've managed to hold position until the finish.

My IR is over 2000 for the very first time and I'm top of my division.

I've also lowered my graphics settings to give me higher frame rates in races and it's stopped the problem of races feeling different to test sessions. I did one race this week where my frame rates fluctuated between 35 and 60 FPS and the input lag was very noticeable. So now I'm running uncapped frame rates and it's made a big difference.

I made more use of official practice sessions this week to give a more realistic feeling of race grip levels, rather than hot lapping by myself in test sessions.

What's this like over Assetto? Is it worth the subscription?

In terms of organised online racing, it can't be beaten, unless you drive in a private league in another sim.

It's also relatively expensive, but for the most part you get what you pay for.

This guy gives a fairly accurate description of a what to expect.

You can get 3 months for the price of one here.

There is still 3 months free out there (I used it last week)

http://www.iracing.com/nurburgring1000/

I think it says it only lasts until a certain day on there but I used it and it still worked.

On the other AC vs iRacing question. I have both, the visuals and potential of AC is there, but the actual meaningful racing in iRacing is leagues ahead.

Even in the scrub ranks starting out as I am, the racing is very competitive but courteous.

I've had a few diving down me, but usually they pull out knowing it will wreck their race.

Going to be a busy week for me, as for the first time there's 3 series I have content for! I'm 4th in Div2 for the RUF Cup, so I'll be practising most of the week for the SOF races there at Road Atlanta.

There's GT3, which is also at Road Atlanta, but I don't have much experience with the RT12 Track yet, so they'll just be for fun.

And then there's WSCS which is at Spa. Had some great results there in W1 of the RUF Cup, so hoping for some SR/IR gains there. I'll need to amend my setup a bit to last 45 minutes though I think.

My target is 3000 IR by next week.

This is the one I used a couple of months ago. I got an email last week from iRacing saying that as I used this code I could get 50% off a years' subscription if I bought by the end of Nov, so I'd recommend this promo.

I'll echo this. I have no direct experience of AC, but I used to race a lot of pickup races in things like GTR2 and Race07, and iRacing is by far the cleanest racing I've had. I've done quite a few races now and never once seen a wrecker. Even in rookies I've never been taken out of a race by anything other than my own incompetence.

Just remember to treat every other car like the back of a donkey when you're starting out and you'll be fine.

You should just be able to jump in the Ruf Track and be fine. Compared to the C Spec it's easier to drive and you don't lock up the rear on the downshift because the car won't let you shift down too early.

Don't forget that the GT3 is 70 minutes at Road Atlanta, so pit stops will be required. Based on fuel consumption over the last two weeks, 15 gallons is enough for a 30 minute race. I usually get the 5 laps of fuel warning as I cross the line for the last lap. So I reckon 2 lots of 16-17 gallons will be enough for 70 minutes. I think I'd be temped to change tyres too. I'll see how the practice goes.

I can echo your busy week, i'm going to squeeze a race in @ Barber in WSCS today hopefully if they go official, I'm currently 6th in Div 3, hoping for a top 10 finish again (7th last season in Div 5, I skipped COTA at the end!)

Going to run RUF cup this week, WSCS @ Spa and practice at Suzuka & Sebring in GT3 cars for private leagues.

I've been painting again too, Renee Gracie Porsche & a BMW that is a work in progress.

I'm finding I'm under-driving it because I'm so used to the CSpec wanting to kill me at every opportunity :)

Blimey, didn't realise they were that long. Good practice for Road Atlanta though I guess.

Congrats on the 2000 irating btw.

I have found the tyres fall off lots faster with the Track version.

I've been putting in practice in the BMW for a league race and is it just me or is it really souless and boring to drive? Hardly any steering feedback compared to the C-Spec too.
