I got 4.6Ghz with ease.

And then you said you ran it at 4.2ghz so there must have been a reason for that. Heat, probably.

Hahaha
No witty reply, nothing..
I run it at 4.0Ghz for 24/7 use because it's so damn powerful ! I only do big OC for benching, no matter what the chip.
5820K is a beast, got awesome reviews, the pick of Haswell -E imho.
Z97 + 4690K makes sense as cheap gaming platform, X99 + 5820K makes sense for a cheap gaming / work PC. Finally X99 + 5960X for the E-peen !!
ebilcake Check if XMP is not setting 125 strap when using 2666 memory. If so Try with 2400@100.
1.35 for 4.2 is extra poor maybe worst on whole forums :/ i got my extra stable with [email protected] as [email protected] bsods on power director encoding. But had same thing with sandy at 5ghz... I had to [email protected] otherwhise it would crash :/.
Anyhow with Asus board you should be better off than me with that OC socket. I went MSI as asus MB is black white not red/black that would not match rest of my pc.
@ ALXAndy
Have you got any cinebench R15 scores with your 3970 ?
hmmm, so you score the same as boomstick but at 5ghz
thats only ~8% slower clock for clock. Thought there would be a greater improvement 2 generations later.
Thanks
X79 lacks a lot of features - worth investing in x99 if your considering x79, since you get all the nice upto date features, including PCI-Ev3, M.2, 10 sata3 ports, just to name a few.
Also bear in mind the x99 motherboard investment will last many years, as you'll be able to buy a 8 core when they are second hand/cheaper, or buy broadwell -E when they release, so it has an upgrade path.
X79 is a dead end - no future upgrades, no warranty if you buy second hand etc etc.
