5820K Overclocking, need some help please

Like the way you dodged the comment, you said

I got 4.6Ghz with ease.

And then you said you ran it at 4.2ghz so there must have been a reason for that. Heat, probably.

Hahaha

No witty reply, nothing..

I run it at 4.0Ghz for 24/7 use because it's so damn powerful ! I only do big OC for benching, no matter what the chip.

5820K is a beast, got awesome reviews, the pick of Haswell -E imho.

Z97 + 4690K makes sense as cheap gaming platform, X99 + 5820K makes sense for a cheap gaming / work PC. Finally X99 + 5960X for the E-peen !!

Why would I put in a witty reply?

You already embarrassed yourself by waving your willy around. Thankfully your opinion that every one should rush out and buy a 5820k and stupid priced ram is completely out of tone what all of the reviews say.

In a gaming PC the 4790k is a faster CPU, given it will clock at least 300mhz more than the 5820k and most games don't care how many cores you have.

So sadly there are really hardly any cases where you could recommend the 5820k because for gaming the 4790k is faster and in an actual workstation they are not well equipped enough. Any one buying a hex on X99 should buy the 5930k because they would probably need the spec.

As for the god thing? your CPU would need to be able to run 4.6ghz all of the time, which it clearly does not given you said elsewhere you were running it at 4.2ghz.

I run mine at a solid 4.7ghz 24/7 and 4.9 when I feel like it.

At which point it is 24/7 faster than yours, better specced and cost the same.

So personally I would suggest finding some one like you who absolutely must have the latest tech, having their pants down and buying a 3930k with a £60 board and cheap DDR3.

I only cheaped out on the CPU because I didn't see the point in buying anything better (given there really isn't anything better as we've established) but I did go kinda crazy on the board because I needed a good board with plenty of X16 lanes.

ebilcake Check if XMP is not setting 125 strap when using 2666 memory. If so Try with 2400@100.
1.35 for 4.2 is extra poor maybe worst on whole forums :/ i got my extra stable with [email protected] as [email protected] bsods on power director encoding. But had same thing with sandy at 5ghz... I had to [email protected] otherwhise it would crash :/.

Anyhow with Asus board you should be better off than me with that OC socket. I went MSI as asus MB is black white not red/black that would not match rest of my pc :P.

I must say I'm having trouble getting mine to 5ghz completely stable. 4.9 is easy, 5 though? a real sod.

I've not gotten into the voltages for the chipset etc but I suspect that the stability lies there, rather than just shoving the CPU full of volts. It only takes me 1.42 to get 4.9hz yet I've gone up to 1.48 and still can't stabilise 5ghz.

@ ALXAndy
Have you got any cinebench R15 scores with your 3970 ?

1235 @ 4.7ghz, just over 1300 @ 5ghz. Hilariously Cinebench seems to run at 5ghz, even though Windows really doesn't want to.

Mind you, I've been seeing a lot of inconsistencies with it of late. I score higher with one GPU fitted etc.

Very odd !

hmmm, so you score the same as boomstick but at 5ghz

thats only ~8% slower clock for clock. Thought there would be a greater improvement 2 generations later.

Thanks

X79 lacks a lot of features - worth investing in x99 if your considering x79, since you get all the nice upto date features, including PCI-Ev3, M.2, 10 sata3 ports, just to name a few.

Also bear in mind the x99 motherboard investment will last many years, as you'll be able to buy a 8 core when they are second hand/cheaper, or buy broadwell -E when they release, so it has an upgrade path.

X79 is a dead end - no future upgrades, no warranty if you buy second hand etc etc.

Blimey you like to exaggerate don't you?

I bought the BBXPII. It's got more features than you could ever need. 7 X16 PCIE slots, 10 SATA (and don't worry what it lacks in SATA 3 it more than makes up for with RAID 0 peformance) and so on.

You make it sound like my 3970x is all of a sudden not going to be good enough really soon. Confusing, given it's every bit as good as a 5930k that can only clock to 4.6ghz. Are they going to be useless by next week then?

I bought the CPU second hand, that's it. I then built a second X79 rig with an 8 core Xeon in for £155. Both rigs more than do what I need them to and won't be going anywhere for a good five years. I've seen almost as many people happily buying X58 Xeons than people buying into X99. In fact, I would wager a bet that more people just bought 5650s than those who bought 5960x.

You continually bang on about how good Intel are? then you need to realise the weight of what you're actually saying. Most of these new things bolted onto X99 can easily be garnered if you have a PCIE slot going spare.

Don't tell me, my Titan Blacks will be useless next week also?

Ed. And it's not a dead end either. I still have the 4960x to buy when I find one really cheap in about three year's time. Gregster has one that does 5ghz on water, more than enough to beat any 5820k by miles.

Right now there is no upgrade path for X99. Broadwell and Skylake are around the corner, they are to Haswell what Ivy was to Sandy. So I wouldn't expect a plethora of upgrades on X99 either. In fact, knowing Intel you'll probably need a new board for them any way.

I've changed the strap back to 100 and when testing the overclock I was using 2133 so I don't that's the issue sadly.

Thanks for actually suggesting something though.

ebilcake and how does 125 strap work for you ?? I cant even boot at 125 90% of time :/ shiet even changing bclk to 101 is no boot i think/hope its msi bios issue
