The SSD space conundrum... 512GB or 1TB?

my new laptop arrives shortly, and the first thing I want to do is to insert my large SSD into her. The question is how large will she need, 512GB or 1TB?

My options are basically:

SAMSUNG 840 500 GB - £145

SAMSUNG 840 1TB - £263

I'm aware that SSD speeds drop sharply when it gets over half full, so am thinking that the 1TB seems like a good deal here, especially as I install a lot of games with mods which means the 500GB may end up restrictive. It's also less than 2x the price for the full 1TB.

So, to cut a long story short... shall I just buy the 1TB SSD drive and then not worry about space for a good while? :)

I havnt experienced much if any slowdown with my 256gb ssd,and its over half full

some ssd's do,older ones with poor software to maintain them, but havnt experienced it with Samsung drives

I don't think slow after half-full is quite right, but there is supposed to be a point that it makes some difference. If you've got the money you should probably go for the 1TB, especially in a laptop where you don't have the room to chuck another in later.

My 120gb samsung Evo is 90% full, got a few games and just windows installed on it. It still runs at the same speed as when I had just windows installed on it on day 1 :)

I've seen no slow down with my ssd and it's over half full.

As for what you should go for, the most you can afford. 512 will be plenty for most people but nice to have the head room with 1tb.

Ok thanks guys feedback was really much appreciated. May go with a 512gb for now and then can always upgrade later when the new 850s come down in price. Thanks! :)

Rich.

Think that is the best idea, if you need extra space for some media things you can always use a cheap flash drive.

have got both drives and i love the Evo the best SSD i have owned to date.

Guys a question... do you think it's worth getting the 840 EVO now, or waiting a week or two for the 850 EVO to be released? I don't mind waiting a measly couple of weeks to setup my new laptop if the difference will be noticeable, as I guess that the drive will be staying in my laptop for a good while. :)

Its cheaper in the long run to go 1tb

True, and less effort (hours wasted) for reinstalling if I upgrade to a larger capacity etc... maybe it's really worth waiting for the 1TB 850 EVO and then just getting it over with...

@Richdog I am facing a similar dilemma with going for an 840 now or waiting for the "imminent" 850 EVOs. What is really odd (and annoying) is that the 500GB 840s have been increasing in price in most stores over the last month. No sign at all when the 850s will be arriving too...
