AIBU - bright dot on Kindle paper white

So my old kindle has a damaged screen, badly damaged so I can't read half of it (me being a numpty and not keeping it in a case). So I decided to buy a new one - thought the paper white one would be a good choice.... it arrived today from the rainforest place and when I went to turn it on there was a bright dot... I want to say 'dead pixel' as it is essentially that sort of issue.

Question is - would you return it?

Pic below - the 'dot' is actually brighter than it appears to be in the picture:

I'm undecided - one one hand it isn't a TV or table where I'd be watching video... On the other hand it is in the middle of the screen and they clearly do have quality control issues with these kindles - in principle I ought to be able to send it back and demand a replacement but that could be a bit of a faff.

If you're not happy with it then get in contact with Amazon customer care, they're generally excellent, especially when it comes to resolving issues with one of their own products.

I'd definitely return it as it's a device that will see a lot of use.

Mine had a couple of them. I didn't return it. Not worth it. You forget about it and don't notice it after a while. Plus a lot of them have the defect. Something to do with the screen technology, so you're not on your own.

If you aren't happen then just make use of Amazon's excellent return policy. It obviously does bother you or this thread wouldn't exist.

Flaws like these, whilst annoying at first, will stop being annoying over time to the point where you barely notice it.

It's your choice though, you could get one that's worse, or one that's flawless. Amazon generally are pretty good about returns, so.

That's the problem. As I said, those little white dots are a very common problem. You could end up changing it 5 times before you find one you're happy with.

If that's a common issue then they should tighten up on the quality control, common or not that would annoy me no end so would be going straight back!

Exchange it if it's bothering you.

Incidentally, would people here recommend the Paperwhite or the Voyage? I'm looking at getting a Kindle myself soon. Only things I really want is a decent back-light for reading at night.

The Paperwhite is more than good enough. I don't think £70 more for a different page turn button is justified.

Both have good back lights. Personally, I think the small increase in res, auto adjusting backlight and the ability to turn pages without pressing the screen overall is not worth the extra over the paperwhite.

Paperwhite is just superb for the price.

I quite like the Voyage, for me it was the combination of page turn buttons (I don't like touching the screen to turn a page), and the higher res which is nice :)

However I'm not sure if it's worth the extra 70+ (mine ended up costing about £230 with it's case), unless you read a lot, but for me it was as I can sometimes end up reading for 3-6 hours solid if I get a good book and don't have any interruptions.
The fact my previous ereader cost £220 about 5-6 years ago probably helps, as I considered that money very well spent :) (460+ books read since December 2008* although some were quite short, and some read several times)

My recommendation would be to try and test the two different models out for a few minutes and see what you prefer.

*I started keeping a log partly out of curiosity to see how much I used it when I got my old 505.

I always have a real book on the go. The e-book is mainly for convenience with travel, plus there are times when an e-book is the cheaper/better option.

I read somewhere that the battery-life in the Voyage isn't as good as the Paperwhite?

Surely that's entirely personal? I have a dead pixel in the middle of my work laptop and it irritates me just as much now as it did 2 years ago when it first appeared.

I had exactly the same issue on my first Paperwhite which I returned without any issues at all via Amazon Customer Services.

I had the issue with the replacement which I also returned.

Thankfully, the replacement for that one is still serving me well with no defects!

That's the thing - it could be a bit of a faff to return if I have to wait for a courier... and if there is a reasonable chance of another one having a similar issue, I think I might just stick with this one. It also seems wasteful that an otherwise perfectly OK product gets discarded because of a very small flaw... they do need to get a grip on quality control though clearly and so I should complain I guess along with the other people who've had the issue.
