Autumn Statement 2014

Expecting lots of sleight of hand from this chancellor, tax giveaways that are recovered elsewhere, public spending increases that aren't, dubious claims about the state of the economy. Gideon is the master of this.

I suppose we'll be told we've never had it so good, and we're all in it together.
Oh and 'austerity'...

This sounds promising, the high street is dying so bringing business rates up to date seems like a good idea.

I imagine that Labour will be listening intently, making notes and amending the Tory ideas to announce it at a later date. :D

On business rates, I'd like to see us follow Scotland's example and end the exemption for sporting estates: http://www.theguardian.com/commenti...wners-scotland-britain-feudal-highland-spring

More promises that will go unfilled, more hitting those that can least afford it.
But hey we are all in this together though I note that that statement rarely gets an airing from a tory politician these days.

Will be interesting to see if there's any change in the North Sea tax regime/incentives - there was a fair bit of talk about it being in the Autumn Statement a month or two ago following the Sir Ian Wood review, but has gone quiet recently.

What boils (boil's?) your blood?

The fact that the deficit hasn't reduced or the fact that Labour are allowed to speak?

The deficit has reduced, it's debt that's gone up (which is natural for any country in deficit, as Labour well know).

Basically Labour are moaning about stuff that's mostly their fault which the current government have no real ability to control. That boils my blood too.

This, vague promises but more cuts to vulnerable peoples services, fire services (already a tiny budget) and cuts to working benefits for the poor.

The very idea of Ed Balls being in charge of the economy is simply staggering but it's probably going to happen.

Expecting the government to announce tax reductions for everyone and free winter fuel grants for the entire populace.

Can dream right?

Heh I know that the deficit is reducing, just missed out a word when re-typing the person I was quoting :p

I do however think it is the opposition's job to hold the government to account, which has to include questioning why Osborne has failed to stick to its original (June 2010 budget) deficit reduction plans. Why does Labour doing their job annoy people?

Probably because in the usual fashion of politics they complain and moan about everything the current government does, regardless of whether it's something actually positive or not. Nearly everything has to have a negative spin.

Of course the Conservatives would be doing if the same if Labour was in power, but it's all rather tiresome.
