Yeh, I had to laugh at somebody moaning about everything having been already discovered by the time us pre-orders get access on the 16th, I think that they are struggling to comprehend how many 400 billion really is :)

You're assuming there is anything really to discover at all - What if there is only the procedural engine (we're familiar with) and after a few dozen systems you realise any more are basically just variations of what you've already seen?

What if ED is a huge huge massive sandbox... but the sand isn't very deep?

What perks? it's essentially an offline game 99.9% of the time, you're only competing with yourselves really. Honestly I've flown for about 8 hours in the past week and never encountered a single other person and that's in open play using the pirate start.

Where abouts is that? I'm assuming out of the way of the beta eranin/ibootis zone.

As for the whole "Oh it's gonna be so ronery" point, people cluster, don't they? I imagine they will be bringing in better player - player interaction in the future that will up the risk/reward stakes for interacting with each other as opposed to Npcs.

Some folk on the ED forums struggle with licking windows. My point earlier in this thread about the average age is a mute point when reading many posts on their forums.

Elite:Taliban Play our story or else.

No wonder some folk want to play solo.. The 'fairplay' group are anything other than fair minded, so it seems.

I'm not making any assumptions, you've missed the relevance, ie; discovery as a way of making money rather than systems being similar which is always going to happen with such large numbers and realistic constraints.

I'll be buying [yet another] screen for this and also a Rift at some point in the future.

I have a few things in the room. All DIY except the desk which is very heavily modified.

Arcade cabinet:

Console Cabinet built for my son:

Desk:

Layout:

Things can get a bit out of hand when working on projects though, particularly complex ones. Before I tidied up:

The desktop, sim rig and arcade cabinet are powered from a single PC. I wrote a simple batch script to swap between the displays, change the wallpaper/sound input or fire up a front-end. Just click a button and it's good to go. My GTX 680 died recently so am saving up to by a 9 series although not sure whether it will be a 970 or 980 yet. It'll have to wait a bit yet though. CPU is a 2600k oc'ed.

Superb mate, hats off to you for enjoying your hobby to the Max.
What do you paint the MDF with? From the finish I'd say sprayed. Also Mrs ThereIs0nly0ne must be very understanding :D

Not that far away but I doubt there's any trade routes which would bring people out my way to be fair. I don't mind the area though, some decent trading to be done there if I ever get my fines and bounty paid off lol

Thanks for that. The white on the arcade and console cabinets is sprayed as are the shaped wood pieces on the desk sides/front. The large, flat black surfaces are covered with blackboard vinyl (more durable, thicker and a nicer texture than regular vinyl) and the remaining black MDF side pieces are primed, painted with blackboard paint and finished with at least 3 coats of polyurethane varnish - all applied with a small foam roller. Yes Mrs TI00 is very understanding indeed; I'm very lucky :)

this is the fella http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GC-027-TH

from the stock photo's you cannot tell, but it splits into two components, the flight stick and throttle, so on your 'board' you can plonk your keyboard in the middle (as long as its not a very long one).

Let's say I had a budget of £100... Is it worth it? Or should I buy cheap first?

I want to be either dependent on a more expensive 'HOTAS' rather than need a keyboard and mouse as well.

If you want to absolutely not need keyboard/mouse you've only really two options IMHO

Whatever you want + voice attack (voice activated control)
or

CH Pro throttle + joystick of your choice, I'd recommend a Thrustmaster T16000M as that's what I use. The throttle can be had for about £70 but you may need to wait on prices dropping on a USA based site and importing it. Reason I mention the CH Pro is that it's got an insane amount of HATS so a fantastic number of potential buttons/switches at your control and it's not going to blow your budget.

After research, I got the cheap one. Voice attack sounds far too good to be true lol.

EDIT: Also, no wipe? Stupid choice no? Anyone new to the game has an incredible disadvantage as it is...

Cheers you've just taught me something new. Was going to get some MDF and paint it with blackboard paint for the little ones room but that blackboard vinyl looks just the job.

Also these different varnishes. I've never really used it much but when I have its been yaught varnish. polyurethane varnish looks just the ticket for the bed I want to build for the littleun as well.

Good stuff ;)

I assume that's always been the plan. Reward the backers :)
However it does mean that I've still been messing around too much and have annoyed lots of people in game when I probably wouldn't if I knew I was not being wiped at the end. Oh well. Time to heal those wounds and reach out with an olive branch.

Not really, it's not a game where I'd say I felt I had to compete with anyone, had a 3v1 fight last night after 3 guys spotted I had a decent bounty on me, scared one into jumping away before I had to bail and I'm a garbage pilot in my "pirate starter" ship.

I'm more concerned about the Lave situation, it seems that people with access to that can make an absolute fortune but as far as I'm aware it's only people who got into the game early so those buying in December will have zero chance to take advantage of that trade route. Having said that I expect it'll normalise itself by then due to the mechanics of trade.

I'm out in the middle of no where, all I've managed to do so far is hunt my way to get my bounty off and make a few thousand on top. Prefer doing it this way, having far, far more fun than trading ever was - I'm intending never to trade, or to only do so when I'm headed to a system anyway for a mission or for exploration.

Lave situation? Are you referring to the trading of rare comoddities?

Yes, I could go take advantage of it but I feel like I'd end up with lots of money and bugger all to do in-game afterwards so I'd rather stick it out where I am, it's been a good laugh too.

I'm not too fussed about changing my ship either, got a pirate cobra and current insurance cost of 12CR if I blow up, flipping awesome lol

Lave has been getting hammered for days and is still highly profitable tbh, this normalisation should happen much faster IMO. Make people protect their knowledge of trade routes, rather than share it.

I see your point, I did a few runs myself yesterday (made about 4 mill in just over an hour). I dont see it as an exploit though.

Each to their own, I want to get the cash quickly, so I can get into a decent ship and go exploring, and I generaly only get a few hours each week to play. Ultimately, it doesn't affect anyone else.
