Will UKIP win its first seat in parliament tonight?

Our motorways used to be fast and free flowing before all those Polish, Lativian and Romanian horses and carts came over here stealing our punctuality, don't you know?

Our motorways would have holes in them if it weren't for the polish workers working on them...........:rolleyes:

You can put those roll-eyes away, It was comedy (facetious to be fair) , as I know for sure the Poles have access to the combustion engine in their native country.

I knew it was comedy and my roll eyes aren't for you.

They are just to imply that I was wholeheartedly being facetious too

Excellent! I like to make jokes about the Polish not having electricity and the like to my daughter-in-law, who's Polish. She just rolls her eyes at my English humour. :D

Stories like that are designed to sell papers / get website hits. If it happens to drive more support towards UKIP then it shows the reader has some leanings that way politically, or - and this will amuse Robgmun - the people are stupidly falling for media spin.

Building companies in London have hired Portuguese bricklayers on £1,000-a-week wages because of a shortage of skilled Britons

How on earth do we have a skill shortage of Bricklayers, all I have heard about is the decimation of the construction industry over the last few years and a huge glut of out of work builders...

So....now instead of foreigners coming over and undercutting / depressing wages for manual labour, they are getting paid 'double the normal wage' a brickie in london would get..

So what does that say about Labour and the Conservatives who are all of a sudden concerned about immigration?

I find this sort of question odd, that people are unhappy that the Conservatives and Labour are now all of a sudden concerned with immigration.

I realise it's in part due to the impending election, but what do you expect them to do?

Given the recent trend in politics they have seen that immigration is of huge concern and so have started to try and address it - again yes there is an impending election but - people are telling them they are unhappy with the state of immigration and they're responding. Yet if they ignore it you're unhappy. What exactly would you rather they do?

You only have to look at the goings on in Calais to see examples of this - why do people travel all through Europe and don't settle there, with their aim being to get to the UK? Some will be down to family/friend/connections, but not all.
On a simple level? English.

It is significantly easier for these people to settle in the UK because they know at least basic language, and whats more the UK as a whole will try to help with those who don't.

The German system is in German. The French system in in French, and so on so forth. Germany and France do not go out of their way to provide translated help with legal documentation.

Anyone know what Roger Bird has been suspended for?

Wanted to get a candidate into bed:

Ukip’s most high-profile ethnic minority candidate has quit the party, claiming that she was sexually harassed by its general secretary.

Natasha Bolter, a headline speaker at Ukip’s party conference, has pulled out of hustings today in South Basildon, where she was widely expected to be elected as parliamentary candidate in the winnable seat.

Ms Bolter, 35, claims that Roger Bird, Ukip’s general secretary and the man in charge of vetting parliamentary candidates, propositioned her over dinner at his London club on the day that he interviewed her as a prospective candidate.

“He asked if we could continue the interview at the Oxford and Cambridge Club that evening,” Ms Bolter said. “I thought it was because I was nervous. [But] when I went I could see that he wasn’t really interested in what I had to offer as a politician. He took me down to the snooker room and said ‘I find you very attractive’. He said, ‘Would you like to come home with me?’ ”

Ukip suspended Mr Bird last night “following allegations of impropriety . . . with regard to candidate selection”.

In October he invited her for a second time to the Oxford and Cambridge Club, where membership is limited to those who attended the universities. “He asked me to pop into his office first at 5pm,” Ms Bolter said. “If the general secretary of the party rings you and says that, you go.”

Mr Bird allegedly told Ms Bolter, who was wearing jeans, that she was not dressed smartly enough to dine later at the Oxford and Cambridge Club, she said. She said he bought her a £169 dress from Ted Baker and some matching shoes, before approvingly telling her that she “now looked like a girl who could get in a taxi”.

“That ****ed me off,” Ms Bolter said. “I felt like slapping him. Before, when I was in jeans, I was obviously an Underground or a bus kind of person.”

Ms Bolter claimed that at this second meeting, after a heavy meal, Mr Bird “leant over and tried to kiss me”.

“It was obvious that he wanted to sleep with me,” she said. “He said, I can help you, I’m supporting you.

“I was quite adamant that I’m not going to sleep with him or anyone [in Ukip]. It’s hard enough for women. We shouldn’t have to sleep with people to get to the right place.”

Ms Bolter said that she left while “very upset”.

After that night she alleges that she received anonymous emails “bullying” her and alleging that she had slept with Mr Bird and was even pregnant with his child. She complained to party officials who instigated an investigation that led to Mr Bird’s suspension.

Ms Bolter’s problems with the party did not stop with Mr Bird. She alleges a catalogue of racism and sexism that was not dealt with despite complaints to top officials.

She claimed, she was told by another prospective parliamentary candidate that her only job was “to look pretty and to get us votes”. On another occasion, a local party chairman allegedly told her that a woman with a young baby was a “****ing Pole” who “hasn’t worked out the benefits system and how to get a free pushchair”.

I wonder if they're really paying Portuguese brickies a grand a week, or if they're paying the agency £1k a week per brickie and a requirement to supply a minimum number of brickies at any one time as that works out cheaper than recruiting and training them yourself.

It's a pretty shocking state of affairs though - how long does it take to train someone as a bricklayer? Are there any opportunities in this country to train as a bricklayer? You'd think that there'd be loads of poor sods on the dole or working on minimum wage in retail/catering/care sectors who'd jump at the chance.

It's all a bit odd, and very much her word against his at this moment, he even claims they actually had a relationship, if he can prove that (texts, phone calls, n0rty photos) then he needs to come out with it pretty sharpish!

Still it's a laughably small deal compared to what the 3 main parties have been caught doing, especially if this pedo scandal explodes.

And if this is best a Labour plant can do then UKIP has nothing to worry about ;)

Haha ex labour anti-capitalist feminist and self described cultural marxist. Joins ukip in septermber and does speech,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFwNRgwLEEU

You can tell she is lying and notice when she talks about equality and everyone cheers, she is disgusted, can't hide true opinions even if labour plant.

Then two months later she claims sexism on one of ukip leading candidates. Oh just a coincidence.

Labour is for life, i wouldn't trust any ex labour candidates in future. It is just not possible to go from an anti-capitalist marxist to a pro capitalist ukip supporter over night.

I am still waiting for the exlabour candidate who claims racism... should be coming up between now and election date.

UKIP seem to have handled the matter well; certainly better than the LibDems managed with Rennard. You get skeezeballs in every party, it matters more that the party deals with the matter well than it avoids it completely.

Might be something about how unreadable renderings of these graphs are, but do I see correctly that most of those otherwise dramatic graphs are actually less than 1% proportions? For example "proportion of angry about immigration in 2010", the scale is 0.6 of a single percentile and barely 0.8% of conservative electorate switched to UKIP?
