@ShiWarrior you definitely worry too much about this stuff! I just use the cheapest base layers I can find, currently rocking some £4 Matalan ones.

Nearly knocked off this morning but thankfully I was watching and was able to stop. Icy out though and not looking forward to the 20mph winds on the way home.

Was very frosty this morning indeed!

Some nice gusts as well, ~40mph!

Nice ride mate, that ibstone road up to the windmill is pretty tough! great view from the top tho:D

haha

yeah I stopped after the first bit where it levels off , so I can see the view, before continuing up the next part

done that about 4 times now, so steep at the beginning !

I'm thinking of sticking my Knog Blinder in the bin on the grounds that it annoys me so much. Waiting until the strap snaps before I bin it might tip me over the edge :D

I just got mine....

thinking about replacing my (broken) saddle bag for a small one
I don't need the space in the winter as I keep my clothes on more

so I can get blinder R on the seat post

Flog it for a few quid to someone but make sure they know about faulty straps... Or just keep it for emergencies?

Starting to go through this claim stuff now with the guy who hit me's insurance - RSA (Royal Sun Alliance?).

Once they'd checked my turn of events against their guy's they've now turned really friendly and just spoken to a great guy who once he'd heard from me that I wasn't looking for personal injury has asked me to list everything damaged and approximate values (with any copies of receipts & photos of damage) to him and he'll sort it out.

Feeling very hopeful at the moment, LBS have quoted me at least re-truing of 2 wheels, gear cable, new bar tape, full service and bike inspection at £108 (+£50 for new helmet). Didn't think that was bad, the guys having a closer look at the frame for me to make sure he's 100% sure about it. I'm trying to suggest to him to find something/marks/scuffs/ding, but how do you word something like that!?:D

Not milking it completely - but to me a £100+ repair on a 1 year old £300 bike should write it off???

I want the insurance to value it at face value (£360 for current model with Halfords), with additional for my upgraded parts and damage to clothing/helmet at around £500 - I could then put some money to it and put it towards a new bike as well as repairing the damage to my current one. That's not dishonest is it?

As much as I don't have a great deal of sympathy for the driver as it sounds like they were being pretty cack... If the bill is ~£100 to repair the bike (and it's a complete repair, not a dodgy bodge) and you don't have any damage to clothes/etc then I personally think that getting more from the driver would be unfair.

It's your call though. If they're planning to go through insurance anyhow then I'd be more tempted by the idea of getting the bike 'written off' (and I'm sure if you say to the LBS that you'd consider going through them they would be helpful in this regard) but I'd still not feel completely right about it.

edit: Somehow I missed half of your post I think. Super tired :/

Be aware that I went through them on my previous claim and I got jack shoot. It's in their interest not to pay you.

You need to have someone representing you or you'll end up with nothing.

Mines in the box after the strap failed yet again! Done with knogs until they change the crappy rubber!

I feel similar to you Tart, that's why I posted my thoughts - everyone I've spoken to has said I should be claiming for personal injury and to 'fleece him for it'. I'm an honest guy and don't feel that's deserved - maybe if I had been hurt, or if he hadn't stopped.

But then that's part of it - at the roadside he was apologetic, admitted it was his fault and he hadn't seen me. Yesterday evening when I mentioned I'd filed an accident report with the police, he refused to give me further information and that he would only deal with me through his insurance (he was difficult with me last night, he said everything to try and worm his way out of it - short of blaming me) it's also come to light the car is a 'Motorbility Vehicle'.

If he was being straight up with me and wanting to make reparations - I'd more than happily get things repaired and save him some money. But being difficult and not showing any willingness to help with my repair makes me want to get at least some positive reparation from the damage caused - rather than riding around with scratches and marks over the frame/wheels/my clothing.

I want to 'play the system' slightly, but rather than for personal injury, I want value towards a replacement bike. My girlfriends spoken to the LBS (she deals with them through work regularly - insurance broker) so we'll see what info she's got from them later. She always says - I'm too honest for my own good! (

If he's starting to be dodgy about things then my sympathy for him would go out of the window to be honest and I'd probably be thinking the same as you :)

@Roady

OK, not trying to sound harsh, but here goes...

He's not being dodgy about anything, he's going through his insurance and they'll have told him not to deal with you, because it's their job to deal with you, and because they don't want him to admit to anything that gives you leeway to claim for more. It would be exactly the same if you'd been in a car accident.

The insurance company owes you nothing beyond getting your bike back to the standard it was in before the accident. Re-truing wheels and replacing a couple of parts sounds reasonable to me. Hell, if you're getting a service out of it you're doing well. It's not like the bike has been destroyed, it's entirely reparable from the sound of things, so where you're hoping to get £500 from is beyond me. You have to remember that the insurance company has no interest in writing off a bike. If they write off a car they can take it to auction and sell it, but what are they going to do with a bike? They're not set up to move that.

Get the repairs valued, get the values of your damaged upgraded parts, get the values of your clothing/helmet/whatever. Get receipts if you've got them, or replacement values from websites, etc. Present that to the insurance company and stick to your guns. While Asprilla's story is not inspiring confidence, I can't see them quibbling over a hundred odd quid. It'd cost more than that to send a loss adjuster out.

But yeah, personal injury is ridiculous in this country, so fair play to you for not claiming when you don't feel it's due.
