So i'm building a ITX build Specs:

MB: Asus Impact VII
CPU: I7 4790k
RAM: 16GB 2666mhz C11
PSU: Silverstone SFX Strider "Gold" 600w

my question is: is the 980 the best card for a itx build now? size doesn't matter and I cant get a 295x2 due to the PSU

everything will be Water cooled / overclocked and I only have the graphic card to get

so what graphic card would you recommend ? and why ?

Fastest single card at the moment (except the 295x2) would be the 980, so id go for that if money is no object!

It's very odd to see the phrases ITX build and size doesn't matter in the same sentence! Most ITX cases have size restrictions - my Hadron Air won't fit a 290/290X without cutting parts of the case.

The 980 is a good choice as it's the fastest single GPU currently, and also runs pretty cool so won't suffer too much if your chassis doesn't have the radiator options or airflow that bigger cases can provide. That said, the 970 has the same advantages, is almost as fast and a good chunk cheaper - up to you if the small difference in performance is worth the extra cash.

What case are you planning to put this little powerhouse into? Sounds like it's going to be awesome.

There are certainly ITX cases that do fit lots though.

My Ncase M1 build has:

Intel i7 'Haswell' 4770k @ 4.5Ghz
Cooler Master Seidon 240m AIO watercooler.
Asus Maximus VI Impact
8GB Ram
Palit Nvidia GeForce GTX980 JetStream
1TB SSD.
Silverstone SFX Strider "Gold" 600w

That would run a 290x though as well if you wanted.

I wasn't disputing that you can fit large GPUs in ITX builds, just saying it's unusual to see the two phrases together. I've done two builds for family over the past couple of years in Cooler Master Elite cases, and that case can fit a 295x2 in. That sounds a very nice rig in your M1 there mate. My ITX build isn't anywhere near that powerful, it's built from parts I had/got cheap for some family LAN weekends. Still love it though. :)

That's what I thought the 980, the case I have gone for is the air 240, with 480mm rad space and might be added another 120mm so total 560 rad space, I know its a m-atx case but with a itx I could fit another 240mm rad in and I didn't want to go sli anyway as this is my last ddr3 build! Also the case is still small enough to move around for lans as I was going to get a 380t which is the same size.

So yeah price isn't really an issue for me just size due to where it will be homed!

Isn't the min requirements for a 290x a 750 watt psu?

Only officially so AMD cover themselves for people who but £20 "750W" PSUs from eBay that actually struggle to provide half that power. A stock 290X should be OK on a good quality 500W PSU, provided the rest of the components don't draw too much, and I ran 2 x 290s and an overclocked Sandybridge i7 on a good 750W PSU. It didn't like it when I tried to overvolt the 290s, but it was happy at normal voltage. :)
