Counterfeit money

They wont afaik. Hence most people try and pass it onto someone else.

Exactly. This is why you're supposed to detain the note. If you don't, it will keep circulating round until somebody (a bank, a large retailer, a supermarket) gets a hold of it, checks it and follows the correct procedure.

That said, personally I don't bother checking. The notes at work are all checked when they're counted at the end of the day. Frankly, I'm less bothered by the idea of a multi billion pound business losing twenty quid than I am if some old dear loses out through no fault of her own. I know my employer budgets for a certain quantity of fake notes, while households don't.

People used to say "get rid of fakes down the pub"

I used to work in a pub. I'd often take £400 per hour when busy. When your touching that many notes its easier, NOT harder to spot fakes. As soon as you touch them its obvious.

Since leaving the pub game I've only ever seen one fake. But that was a pound coin direct from a cashier at the bank. I told her it was fake scratched the surface to reveal the underneath and asked for another. She wanted the fake back so I told her sorry I have to hand it in to the police.

The look she gave me was priceless.

they were already down the value of that note, the retailer hasn't changed that

how are you not going to take a hit on it - someone is at some point down the line when it gets found, if you're caught passing it on and the next person is sharper than you and spots it then I don't think you've got any grounds to get upset - they caught you out either knowingly or unknowingly passing on a fake note, they're not going to accept it and they have no reason to give it back to you

If I've been passed a fake note and I'm unawares, I'm not taking that hit. If I can return to the source, then I will. Otherwise, no I'm not letting a shop keep it, I'll be getting it back.

Then as a shopkeeper I'd call the police and report you for trying to pass counterfeit money

to do what with? It is practically worthless already, you've already taken the hit.

As far as the shopkeeper is concerned maybe he's fed up with being passed fake notes and is doing his fellow shopkeepers a favour - you're demonstrating exactly why they should be keeping the note

To use elsewhere, I'd take it to a supermarket. As I said, I'm not taking the hit, and I haven't already until it's out of my possession.

Stop talking in theoreticals.

the whole threat is 'theoreticals'

and there is your answer - you then intend to rip off a supermarket with the note.... it is obviously in their interests in general to stop someone like you - you're just confirming why they shouldn't hand it back to you

And it's likely that I might have received a fake note from the supermarket, so as I keep saying I'm not taking the hit when it's not exactly my fault.

no one holds onto the note, you are just setting yourself up for a whole lot of grief,

use counterfeit pens to check, if fake, scribble 'FAKE' across it, and hand it back to the customer,

half of the time these people have been handed this fake in there change, this way they accept it is there problem, but it also insures it wont be passed on anywhere else.

well some shops do, clearly

I have worked in retail recently, and a few companies make it company policy to check every note with a pen, ultra violet light has already been faked.

I actually have a fake here, taken recently at a till point, £20 and very very well done.

in fact here are some photos of it, with watermark, foil strip and fake serial number (known to police) it also has the ultraviolet markings, and before anyone tells me its an offence to have it, it is used for training till point staff.

And how is it their problem if they have that note due to being handed it with change?

They should check it.

Most fakes are pretty easy to spot. You can normally spot a fake my feel so almost instantly you'll know its a dud.

If they are really good fakes then chances are the shops may not spot them either

We got given a fake note (quite a good one) at a car boot once. I took it to the police (loooong queue) and they didn't give a ****.

They called me the next day to say I should pick it up and take it to the bank and see if they would change it

Most fakes are £20's

If youve been given change with £20's you've paid with a £50. Which they WOULD defo check. That A gives you time to check your change and B possibly another £20 to check it against
