New Car, GT86

Clarkey check out Pistonheads, the video they are referencing is in the thread called 'Troy is real...' or something like that...

Its some pretentious dude badly reviewing his own porsche 964, very elitist and OTT about his driving skill versus the demands of the car.

It's a sheep in wolf's clothing. I remember the disappointment when I saw the power figures. It's a mid-life crisis car for people who don't want a TT or a Boxter.

Or a car for people who want to work an engine and gearbox a bit without hitting three figure speeds before you can say "Sorry Officer...".

I think the comparison to the current MX-5 is a good one. Both offer a rewarding drive, both need to be worked (half the enjoyment for me when on a drive) and they both offer fun over figures.

If I had to have a single car and had the money I'd be very tempted to go for the GT86.

Lols, look at professional motoring reviews of it, I've not seen any of them yet call it a midlife crisis car or for those who can't afford a TT, they've all said it's for those who want an out and out affordable rwd sports car with lots of tail happy fun thrown in.

Or it would be, if it wasn't priced like a 300bhp hot hatch.

At £15-£18k it would be an awesome car and almost all criticisms levelled at it would vanish.

But it's not £15k. It's £25k.

You can get these for £20.5k from a broker which I think makes it much more reasonable. I would hope any prospective buyers who are a member of motoring forums and are aware of brokers should pay no way near the £25k list.

I love these cars, great choice. I've had a couple of extended test drives now - the way you can feel the car pivot around you when cornering is very satisfying and I didn't need to reach license losing speeds to enjoy it on the back roads.

I was very close to ordering one but I just wasn't satisfied with the interior as a brand new car. I also found second gear annoyingly stiff when the gearbox was cold and there's horror stories of detonation damaging injectors on track days (where I would definitely want to use it).

As for the complaints about it not feeling like a £25k car, I agree, but bear in mind that these can be ordered for £20.5k brand new from a broker now for the spec which includes most of the options. Given this I think the residuals on used cars are still far too high. I'm waiting for the market to catch up and once they hit £12k I'll be straight in one.

Enjoy!

The main dealers don't even need that much poking to drop the price, I got 3k off list just by saying it's too expensive.

Even at 20.5 it's still too much for what it is.

Like you say 10-12k for a recent used one you could say it's a decent buy.

Plenty of discussion about the 2nd gear issues on owner's club forums. I found it a bit finicky, but I've now switched to a better gearbox oil and it improved the box immensely. Still a little notchy on the first couple of shifts when cold, but after a couple of miles it's warmed up and is nice and precise.

Interestingly, I believe it has the same gearbox as that found in the MX5 NC, and I always found that the box in that could be a right pain the neck. The first shift into second was almost impossible from cold, and even after an oil swap, I used to find it the weakest part of the car unless you were driving it quite hard - a problem I've not had with the GT86.

Will - have you had any problems like that with your MX5's gearbox? Would be interesting to know.

In my 5 I find 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd a bit notchy (and it occasionally graunches slightly on 2nd to 3rd) but only when cold, once I'm a mile down the road it's better.

I did change the gearbox fluid in the summer to the castrol syntrans stuff everyone recommends, it was a slight improvement but nothing vastly different. Do love the gearbox in the mx5, one of the best things about the car, prefer it to the s2000 box that everyone raves about (my s2000 was extremely graunchy when cold and it also had the common problem where it would pop out of second occasionally too, I didn't have the car long though and accept a change of gearbox oil may have remedied these annoyances).

It seems to be that 99% of performance Jap cars suffer from this notchy 2nd gear  I don't notice it in the mk-3 MX-5 (admittedly, I don't drive it every day) but I can certainly feel the gears slot in smoother when the oil warms up.

I remember swapping the gearbox oil in my MX5 to Motocraft oil as everyone raved about it. Made things better for a while, but I still never really got on with it. In the GT86, I've swapped to Miller's formula and after 4 months it's still feeling like a definite improvement in shift quality.

Apart from a new number plate I don't get why people don't get a late S2000 rather than a GT86 / BRZ.

Because fantastic as the S2000 is, it's not a GT86...and I wanted a GT86
Yes, I wanted a "newer" car, after only ever owning older ones, I admit. But I had the money for it, so I treated myself to something I really wanted. That might not be justification enough for some, but it is for me. So far, I don't have any regrets, despite knowing how much "more" I could have got for my money :)

That aside though, I don't think you're making an entirely fair comparison. The S2000 is amazing, but renowned for being quite a handful unless you have your wits about you. The GT86 is not as capable, but much more accessible for someone like me. Also, it's more practical for day to day use than an S2000, whilst still being a fun toy.

I liked the 86, but agree with that.

I think its probably the new car factor + plate

I can see the 5 year warranty playing a big part in some peoples decision.

Everyone can drive a peaky rear drive with a locker no problem at all. This is evident by the total lack of crashes. Oh no wait....

I've paid my dues and turned a mint car into a banger racer already.

Ahahaha, because a 300bhp hatch is fine at a similar price.

RWD, LSD, lower centre of mavity than a Cayman, bigger rear seats than a TT (actually fit an adult in), solid Toyota/Subaru reliability. Literally the only fair criticism of the car is the relative modesty of power, which is only really ever a problem if you feel you need to race other people on the public road.

A TT is double the price with similar equipment, a Cayman 3 times the price, so of course there will be areas in which the other 2 exceed what's on offer with the Gt86 / BRZ. Don't forget the vast difference in running costs and consumables between the marques.

Methinks many here don't "get" what the car is trying to be. To me cars like the MX5, GT86, 370Z, S2000 are a million times more interesting than these Chavved up hatches.
