The olde TV licence

We dont have licence even though my partners dad was saying to us we need to get one (we dont as all we watch is Netflix). Never had any letters saying they will pop round to see if we are watching tv live or not. If they did I would have no problem letting them in as I got nothing to hide and tv says "no signal".
It will be a lot easier to just let them have a look than kick up a fuss about it (that is if you are innocent). Still your choice.

Dear Occupier

I have reason to believe you may be breaking the law by harbouring pink owls, panted pink by your hand, as pink owls do not occur naturally under the laws of nature. If indeed you are found to be unlawfully keeping AND painting owls pink, this is an offence under section 9 of the cruelty to gay birds act 2007. We will be visiting your premises shortly to conduct an investigation. If a pink feather is found anywhere at the time of search, you will be liable for a maximum fixed penalty of 2 gannets, and a newt.

Yours Sincerley

If you fill out the online form to say you don't require a licence, all what happens is you get threat-o-grams with your name on rather than ones addressed to 'the occupier'.

You don't have to give a name or any other contact details other than your address on the form.

I cancelled mine about 2 weeks ago, I think the only thing I was watching it for was the news in the morning which i can do without, it's so biased on anything involving politics anyway that I wont miss it, I have unplugged the cable and zip tied it up and applied for a license refund but guess that will take a while.

With the money saved I am trying out netflix for the first time. A decent range of stuff to watch when I want to watch it and it's cheaper too. My license fee was somethinglike £159 which suprised me, I thought it was still around the £122 mark.
I personally think the license will be gone in 10 years and the BBC will have to seek funding elsewhere.

I've saved a fortune over the years by not bothering with a TV Licence. The monthly threat-o-gram just goes straight in the bin unopened.

I don't see why I need to let them in either to check. No law saying I have to contract with them.

It's easier and quicker to just close the door. I guess if they are going to do repeat visits then perhaps but I really wouldn't trust them, they're on commission, they're not vetted and they've been caught lying in the past.

Is there anything reputable that would back up the assertion that over 50% of TV licence inspectors have criminal convictions for 'thuggery' related crimes?

We haven't had a TV licence for 4 years now. When we originally told them we didn't need one they sent someone round who inspected our TV setup, even though the aerial was still plugged in (just hadn't got round to unplugging it) the guy was quite happy to sign it off. We moved house 2 months ago and got a letter at the new property. I went online and just filled in one of their online comments forms with our old address and explained that we still didn't need one and we have been left alone since.

I think it's one of the little myths that are put about, either that or confusing things like motoring offences with violence ones.

You're doing it wrong, you are meant to ignore every attempt to contact you, be difficult, then complain you get a letter every few months ;)

Sounds like an Admin error then. That's not the norm.

It really is dude, just browse an applicable forum such as TV Licensing resistance, many many many people say the same, you tell TVL you don't need one, they basically go okay then and within 6 months you're knocked off the 'Leave them alone' list and the cycle will repeat.

2 years seems to be more normal.
Even once every 6 months isn't bad given that depending on where you live there can be a very high chance you'll be moving every 6-9 months.

It would be interesting to see if the people that get asked again sooner tend to happen to live in areas with high numbers of student accommodation.

Flawed logic for two reasons

People like myself and several others on here who have also stated they haven't had such issues which you are claiming are common practise are unlikely to be on such forums. So the vast majority of people on such forums are going to be negative. However do not make the mistake of assuming that a negative forum represents the majority of the total population of a given event. To put it into context I myself deal with complaints for my employer so only see the stuff that goes wrong. Now I could look at it two ways. I could assume that everything I deal with is a complaint therefore everything my employer does must be wrong, or I could look to include other data which confirms that whilst 100% of the stuff I deal with represents complaints it represents less than 1% of the total business my employer does.

These forums are not a controlled group and people generally troll in a negative manor to stick it to the man. Meaning you can't take the total sum of the evidence on such forums as fact.

I've never had a TV licence and have no intentions of ever getting one. What're they going to do about it, waste their time and money by sending me a few letters and maybe sending a few jackboots to knock on the door every now and then? I can live with that.

I barely watch TV.. Maybe the odd Sherlock episode or documentary when it's on or then I have guests around. Most of my viewing is Blu ray/DVDs and online services but I honestly don't mind paying for the TV license has it allows the BBC to produce programs that no other channel would touch for financial reasons. The amount of cash people spend on their sky subscriptions and their don't moan; I know people who pay more per month than their tv licenses per year.

The BBC also bring in their own income by selling the ideas to other Tv programs, like Top Gear and the office. IF it did go commercial; all we would get is the z factor sponsored by Jacobs cream crackers 24/7 on all channels.

Seconded. Utter utter drivel. The license should be scrapped and BBC X be paid for via advertisements like other channels.

Yes, let's put all our media outlets into the hands of Private companies so we can get more news like The Sun and The Daily Mail
