I thought the Northwave winter boots would be all the rage!

I'd consider some if it meant warm feet and no messing about with overshoes etc

I use Northwave GTX boots

I actually don't think they are as good as they are supposed to be, feet get cold , and water gets in a bit too

I wear my overshoes over the top if them

Also overshoes, can I get away with buying a pair for use over my trainers? I have waterproof socks but again with this weather I envisage hell for my New Balance's?

Overshoes dont fit particularly well over trainers. They usually have very big chunky soles whereas cycling shoes dont have any cushioning.

:-/ they look the best of the winter shoes.

I was looking for something better than two pairs of socks and overshoes but maybe not then as they are hardly cheap to find out they aren't warm enough.

Some great photos here.

Cheers for letting me know, much appreciated. Does the same apply to toe covers?

I'm not sure. I've never used toe covers.

You could try getting some XXXL overshoes. (unless you have massive feet anyway). My overshoes do stretch over trainers but it's very tight. I broke the zips on my cheap chinese overshoes doing this, but maybe thats just because they are not very well made.

Last week was the first week all year that I didn't ride at least once, rubbish. The weather is now absolutely bum and I'm a bit ill, so it'll be a few days till I get out again. This might be me done for this year.

same

didn't sleep last night
I went out yesterday but wish I hadn't, lungs were hurting due to how cold it was..

I've completely written off this month. Been visiting relatives and weather has been garbage. Real training will begin in earnest in the new year and the new bike will be purchased for the summer.

Northwaves here and I can't recommend them enough. Don't get wet at all from bottom/front only a bit of saturation from the hole... Warm enough but because of how your feet when operating a bike they're never going to be toasty.

Going to try and get out tomorrow morning but I suspect it's going to be pretty icy, hopefully my garmin 500 arrives before I head out so I can test it out.

I have these boots, they are pretty good. You cannot expect them to be fully waterproof but I have never used overshoes on top of them. My only gripe with them was I got a pair second hand and they can be a bit tight.

For winter riding they are awesome and worth the outlay just for the comfort they give.

Need a 2nd hand or a cheap campag hub rear wheel so I can take the roadie out sometimes! Getting bored of my fixed commuter lol.

Howdy, all. Looking at getting some clothing to keep my legs warm and not having to wear my jeans on my short commute to work. What would people suggest? I see all these things about bib tights, shorts, shorts over bib tights etc and it's all a bit confusing. If I could get something that would do the job for £40-50 in the sales I'd be happy.

Currently wear an Endura softshell over a baselayer which keeps the top half of me absolutely fine.

Are you looking for something all year round?

Something like this will keep you warm at this time of year: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-active-thermal-padded-bib-tight/

Rick - 'bib' tights are just our cycling 'long-johns' but usually made of lycra-like material so they are tight fitting, the 'bib' just means they have no waistline (held over your shoulders) so are more comfortable than clothing with waistlines (try some you won't be disappointed).

The DHB thermals linked are my bread and butter, I now have 5 pairs as I don't like spending much money as I'm Welsh! :p;)

If you don't want to go for cleats (clip ins) then possibly look at some hiking/walking shoes? They'd have the movement of trainers but would be harder wearing and possibly waterproof. I know my missus always hunts down a new pair of 'full leather upper' trainers every time she gets wet feet... But then she refuses to spend anything more than £30 on footwear for commuting!

I'd seen so many mixed reviews of the northweave boots, for the price I wasn't going to risk it! Overshoes and thermal socks for me... If it comes to it - waterproof socks to wear under the shoes! But to be honest I've had no problems in my XC30's and the DHB Neoprene overshoes. The rest of me is considerably wetter than my feet in any torrential downpour! :)

You should have gone for the ones without the pad, then you can get more than one ride between washes an wear your summer padded bibs underneath. Much more economical.

Any ideas for freeing a couple of stuck chainring bolts? I think my winter chainring isn't as thick as my normal one so a couple of the chainring bolts have bottomed out on themselves, locked up and just spin. I've got one of those t-slotted chainring bolt wrenches, but it's quite frankly useless; it just keeps jumping out.

I'm going to give this a go for the chainring bolts. Nuisance having to take the crank off that side but the method makes sense:

LFGSS thread said:
(presumably with the chainring tool in the vice jaws) lie flat on vice and use an impact driver whilst pushing the opposite side flush as hard as you can on the vice it should unnip the thread

There's a good tip about filing the bolts down a bit to stop it happening again.

Wow -5'C here on the commute this morning, can't remember the last time it was that cold :O

Glad I road the CX into work, none of the roads were treated :/ I'm refusing to put it in the bike shed, it's outside wrapped in tarpaulin. I'm thinking about buying a cheap van, and then leaving it at work as a make shift bike shed :D
