Two year old shot mother dead

Guns dont kill people, theyre only a tool used by other humans to kill each other. Be that through warfare, criminality or accidents. Put a cricket bat in the wrong hands and it becomes a lethal weapon, or a drunk behind the wheel of a car. Yes a gun will do it quicker and much more simpler if in the hands of a nut job or someone not properly educated in the use/handling of firearms. Gun laws are extremely strict here in northern ireland, even an air rifle has to be on a firearm certificate. Unlike the rest of the uk where an air gun can be bought by anyone over 17, shotgun is on a shotgun certificate then an FAC for rifles. Pistols are still legal here, mainly for sports target shooters and personal protection weapons for ex/current serving armed forces/police/prison staff.

Am a little surprised that a two year could even pull the trigger as I would thought that a gun trigger would have been fairly stiff to pull

Plus a two old hand would not fit around the hand grip on a gun...

If it was a revolver and had the hammer drawn back, then as little as half a pound of force could fire the thing.

Well maybe they should take a leaf out of Switzerland's book. Training with stricter measures to insure basic firearm safety is in place. It would have probably kept this woman alive.

A lesson from the Swiss system would be only those with military train job would be allowed a gun, twins would have store houses where guns can be kept out of the home, and ammunition would also not be taken home.

Even then, one can expect very high homicide rates from guns compared to other western countries with tighter regulations. So perhaps the US should simply follow the UK system.

The Swiss still take bullets home... I'm told its easy to sneak them out.

The U.S. will never follow the UK system... there are too many people whoown guns that would never give them up. Also, if the U.S. implemented the UK's penalties for jail for possession of a firearm then the system simply would not cope.

For the US to get rid of its gun problem would take many, many years off gradual cultural and regulatory change... and even then there are simply so many guns in circulation to be sold and traded on the black market that the wrong people will still have hold of them.
