Toyota GT86 - One year review.

I know everyone seems to hate Rotas but a set of Rota Titans would look fantastic on your car...!
 
Nice write up. Like others, I am keeping an eye on these to see how the second hand prices come down over the next few years. Does need different wheels and it seems a few minor mods to improve it further.

It is also on aftermarket suspension. I can find out what kit/how low it is if you want.

Thought I recognised the plate, his wheels are blue now and the car is supercharged. He runs the Drivers club.

I've had mine 16 months now and it still makes me smile when I drive it. It's had the Cosworth stage 1.1 kit (out of the box remap/filter/exhaust) which makes the car feel more spirited.

Yeah thats right! Rob is a cool guy. :)

I preferred the wheels black, and I'm not a fan of his new tail-lights. :p
 
Great review, really enjoyed reading that.

I would agree with most points you made from my own test drive in one but it is great to see them expanded on from an enthusiast point of view.

I felt the brakes were a bit poor perhaps. They didn't have much in the way if pedal feel or communication.

I am perhaps too inexperienced a driver to criticise them much, or know what to expect in terms of feel and feedback from the brakes, but I can kind of see what you mean - I think I would like them to be a little sharper.

Interestingly, at the first service, I asked them to investigate the squealing brakes. When I picked the car up, the dealer said they'd contacted Toyota UK who'd claimed it as simply a characteristic of the "sports compound" (TM) used in the pads, so was normal. However, as I drove away from the dealership, the squeal had gone and the brakes felt much sharper. I suspect that they simply drove the car up the road and did a few hard stops which helped bed the brakes in a bit more. The squeal has returned though so I might go and do the same and see if it helps the brake feel improve any.

Good review. :)

I drove one which had been modded in terms of breathing mods (including exhaust) and remap. Didn't seem to have a flat spot but was great fun. Not fast but HUGE fun.

Exactly what i thought when i test drove one. They felt quite weak in a way as well, if i remember correctly as well.

They don't as standard. Might improve things, but at the moment I'm just looking at putting some better quality pads in. I don't do any track work, so it's not a big priority for me though.
 
I like these but I wouldn't spend big money on one.

My Evo 8 FQ-300 does everything better than the GT86 and probably only cost half the price. Granted it is 11 years old and has 40k on the clock.

I have a MR2 mk3 too so I know about RWD but it's not as rewarding as the Evo on a spirited drive.

The Evo has flaws though, you can watch the fuel gauge go down when making progress and insurance is pretty expensive.

Anyway, this thread is about your GT86. White is a great colour choice and if you're happy that's the main thing.

Like drink more fuel, cost more to insure, more to service and throw up bigger bills when it breaks?

An Evo 8 is a fantastic car and obviously much quicker than a GT86, but as an ownership proposition its clearly going to be a totally different experience and potentially much more expensive and troublesome.
 
That, and I don't think a comparison against an 11 year old car is very fair. By that metric, there's going to be thousands of cars that are technically better for much less money.

Not to mention an old Evo looks horrendous, has a boy-racer stigma attached to it, is not a low slung sportscar... etc etc. You comment is about as useful as, "might as well buy an old m3".

Maybe you should buy an old exige. That'll do everything better than your evo and you'll still be able to own an old 2nd hand car!
