i have a D-Link DIR-636L router and for some reason i cant change my ip adress in the routers web gui anymore.
i clicked on the "copy your pcs mac adress" but nothing happens.
is this normal? can i change it in another way?
i noticed that i cant release and renew my ip either in the gui, nothing happens when i click release. before i could click the release button and the internet was switched off and then i could click renew and it came back, the ip didnt change but at least i could do it, now i cant. what can be wrong?

Are you trying to change your actual connection's external IP address? Or your own individual's PC internal IP address (i.e. 192.168.x.x)?

I will presume you're trying to reset your external IP, if so try turn your router/modem off for say 5-10 minutes and hope your ISP's DHCP drops your IP address. Once you switch it back on you may have a new IP.

theres gotta be a way to change it without doing that.
when i had a switch i could just go to cmd and type ipconfig/release, take out the internet cable and wait for 10 seconds and then but it back and i had a new ip, why cant i do this or something like this with a router? should never have bought it.. people told me it was better than a switch but it sucks! i bought it couse i wanted the speed to be quicker when i copy files from my nas. i upgraded to a gigabit router from a 100mbit switch and it is faster now, but this ****, that i cant change my ip when i want...sucks!

I think you need to calm down a little son.. You could never renew your external IP by completing ipconfig cmd prompts, changing router or switch hasn't changed that.

What are you trying to achieve exactly? It might help if we knew why first.

i just wanna change my public ip adress, thats all.
and yes, i could do this when i used a switch but with a router its not possible

Stop trolling or using hacks on games then kiddo.. Haha

Anyway, assuming you have a dynamic IP you're only option is to switch your router/modem off for a few minutes then switch it on again. No guarantee though!

there has to be a way. when this worked before i got a new mac adress when i clicked on the "copy mac adress" button in the router web gui, so i tried to change mac adress myself. even this didnt work  i got a new mac adress but the ip is still same

The only way you could have changed your external facing IP is if you were to have unplugged your router and waited for the ISP's dhcp lease to expire and then plugged it back in.

Maybe if you could give us a little detail as to why you would possible want to change your external IP to something of your choice?

The only other way to change it manually to an IP address in a given range is if you were to have purchased a block of IP's from your ISP but I very much doubt you would have done that.

You sure you are taking about your external IP and not internal ?

its my public ip and i have changed it several times before with just a click on the "copy mac adress" button and then press "save" in my routers web gui

That does not make sense for a public IP address as MAC address is only associated with your physical NIC

Unless some other network guru can correct me

When you click "save" next to where you clicked copy Mac what IP address is there? 192.x etc or 10.x etc ? What does the label say ?

Ok let's just start again. Why do you want to change your public IP
on some sites i can only download 1 file/hour.
i wanna change my ip so i dont have to wait.
copy mac adress in router web gui dont work anymore, i must have changed some setting or something. maybe i have to reset the router to original settings..
