change my ip adress

Copy Mac registers your PC Mac with your ISp, I'm not sure if this would actually issue you with a new IP. Maybe just go trough a public proxy server is an easier way

i was planning to reset the router but first i wanted to try the good old restart.
when i had it turned on again i logged in to the gui just to check if it would work... and it does!
the mac adress dont change when i press "copy mac adress" and when i click save it says that nothing has changed, save anyway..i choose yes and then i have new ip :)
tried it a couple of times just to be sure that it works 100 % and it does.
i can even go to that other section in the gui and press release and then renew, ip doesnt change but it didnt the last time i could press those buttons anyway.
interesting to see how long this will work. i dont know if my router is broken or if this is normal. maybe it is necessary to restart your router once in a while to be able to change ip..?

theres gotta be a way to change it without doing that.
when i had a switch i could just go to cmd and type ipconfig/release, take out the internet cable and wait for 10 seconds and then but it back and i had a new ip, why cant i do this or something like this with a router? should never have bought it.. people told me it was better than a switch but it sucks! i bought it couse i wanted the speed to be quicker when i copy files from my nas. i upgraded to a gigabit router from a 100mbit switch and it is faster now, but this ****, that i cant change my ip when i want...sucks!

Also if you were directly connecting your local area network (your PC, and NAS etc) to the modem with a switch, you lost all the protection a router has - Network Address Translation, firewall, any intrusion detection inside it.

Kinda like driving down the road with your head out the window. Fun, but asking for something unpleasant to hit you.

I said this in post #2..
not exactly, you just told me to turn off the router and wait 5-10 minutes and turn it back on. i still had to copy mac adress after restart to change my ip, but without waiting

If you want to change you IP to fool site restrictions, look at a VPN like Hola or IBvpn rather than messing about with your router.
no thanks

This thread....
yes...? this thread what?

i have a D-Link DIR-636L router and for some reason i cant change my ip adress in the routers web gui anymore.
i clicked on the "copy your pcs mac adress" but nothing happens.
is this normal? can i change it in another way?
i noticed that i cant release and renew my ip either in the gui, nothing happens when i click release. before i could click the release button and the internet was switched off and then i could click renew and it came back, the ip didnt change but at least i could do it, now i cant. what can be wrong?

Just because you click 'copy your pcs mac address' this means not a thing in regards to your external address.

see post 2!

If you click "Copy your PCs MAC address" from the same PC and connection each time then it's not going to be actually changing anything.

What ISP are you on? I don't know of any UK provider that lets you just plug a switch into the modem and get multiple public IPs assigned via DHCP.

The way to change your public IP address on most providers is to drop the connection and reconnect, I'm not sure why you're making this so hard for yourself.

Just plug your modem into one of the gigabit network ports on your router instead of the LAN port, and turn off the DHCP section of your router.

You get what you want, a switch connected to the internet, and fast speeds to/from your NAS and you can use your ISPs DHCP as much as you like to shakedown websites or chatrooms.

We get to sit and chuckle about the insanity of your setup with directly connected PC and internet connection.

Win-win I reckon.

hard? i think turning my router off and have no internet for 10 minutes is much harder than click on two buttons and wait 15 seconds

You said nothing happens so which is it? It either does something or it doesn't.
first it didnt but after i rebooted my router it does. you can go back and read

This thread makes for painful reading.

don read it then

My old CableTel connection used to work this way, before they got taken over by NTL who then rebranded to Virgin Media.

Maybe we've travelled back to the year 2000? :D
