Steven Gerrard leaving liverpool interview :(

Care to link me to an article or video where he's said this is financially motivated.

Offer from best league(or joint best league) in the world on table refused... reportedly interest from other top leagues already..... states he's going to the MLS, significantly worse quality league that has one factor going for it, money.

Now, if he had stated his intention to live over there longer term then being in the MLS isn't a half bad way to do that but he's said the opposite, he intends to come back to the UK. That leaves the sole reason for going to the MLS financial, or do you believe he's going for the high level of the football over there and the competition?

He effectively has said he doesn't care which team in the MLS he's going to, which ever stumps up the best offer gets his signature. So it's not like he's gone over and been wined and dined by a specific club with a big plan or he'd be saying "oh, I went to the Galaxy and their setup, their plans for the future are amazing, I'm signing there". He's said I don't know where I'm going in the states but I'm definitely going to the states.... with the unspoken portion of the sentence reading "because they are offering way more than anyone else".

How much have the other clubs offered him?

Edit: He apparently turned down a 2 year contract in Qatar worth 170K a week. Yep, all about the money.

Honestly I don't get why people are saying stuff like he clearly doesn't want to leave, or why aren't the club giving him less money to play less often....

"I don't know where I'm going yet, but it will be america", "Rodgers has said they'll have to manage my games", etc, etc.

Liverpool have made it perfectly clear they'll happily keep him and Gerrard has made it perfectly clear he's taking the biggest financial offer on the table with MLS teams willing to offer more for a player not anywhere near his best than any other league and he's waiting to see which team gives him the biggest offer.

It's got nothing to do with playing every week otherwise he'd take less money at a smaller team than Liverpool in a top 4 league and play every week. He's gone to the MLS for one reason and one reason alone, money.

Nowhere has money been reported, yes he will get paid more in America and if he signs a new contract here it would be for less money than he is on now. If he was offered a coaching role then maybe he could be persuaded.

I agree he shouldn't be on £100k a week any longer and he can't play every game, if that isn't good enough for him I am with the club but I feel a compromise could be reached.

He also said he does not want to ever play against Liverpool, most leagues have that with european competitions so America makes sense, also many EPL players end up there, also he knows his legs can't play every week in top european leagues so where does that leave? America.

It's a sad these players who are retiring I watched throughout childhood to being old (!) and there don't seem to be any characters coming through anywhere near their class who are English!

Who can blame him for getting one last massive pay day in America. What a life!

It's not a massive pay deal, it's significantly less than he's on now :p

Watching the videos of him at his best striding past players and smashing it in the top corner is the player I'll always remember, haven't seen that for a few years now :(

yeah haven't seen him score a wonder goal in a long time or even a real hard tackle to get the crowd going

Ah, fair enough. Still....America is better than sat on the bench at Liverpool :)

He's Liverpool's top scorer in the PL this season. Set piece master :D

I like how you instantly assume he didn't get offered more from an MLS team than that thus know it's not about the money. But more so is trying to compare Qatar... living and playing in extreme heat in a ridiculous league and in a situation in which many players have gone to for a huge contract and massively regretted it, to the MLS where players basically love it and the lifestyle.

Of the players who go to the MLS for money many see out their contracts fully, others only come back if they get a good offer or fancy some more competition but often it's a loan. Players have been not paid in Qatar, stuck in country, had passports taken away, players have zero power and no protection at all. It's not a "real" option to any sane person.

If I offered you 75k + 2 year contract at Liverpool, 150k + 3-4 year contract in the MLS, 175k + 2-3 year contract in Qatar. Which would you take for money and which would you take for footballing reasons?

If you posted this on the Sun/Dailymail/Liverpool forums/here as a pole 99% would take Liverpool for footballing reasons and MLS for money, almost no one would take Qatar despite being more.

EDIT:- ultimately you can be paid 150k a week in Qatar to play once a week and have very little else to do, or be paid 150k a week in the states and live somewhere where you can surf and hang out on fantastic beaches half the week or drive a couple hours inland and go skiing, hob knob with celebs at parties, functions, awards, loads of things, attend NBA/NFL games and generally live a millions times nicer lifestyle as you play. Living in the US as a rich and famous sports star and living in Qatar are so far removed from each other, one is a dream life, the other is pretty crappy.

I'm not blaming him or remotely looking down on him for it, most players would do the same. It's the ridiculous comments of how he clearly wants to stay and Caragher banging on about how Liverpool could let him leave. If Gerrard wants a big pay day there isn't anything Liverpool can do about it. I mean they could offer him 250k a week to stay, till the day he dies but ultimately Liverpool are a business, offering a soon to be bit part player a massive wage prevents them doing other business on first team players and players for the future.

It doesn't remotely matter if he retires at Liverpool or another team. He could like many others stay at the top level for too long and make a bit of a fool of himself or go get paid to play at a lower level, the latter makes far far more sense. In his position(not age but how much less effective he's become outside of set pieces) I would also choose the MLS and a pay day, why the hell not.

I'm sure he spoke to Beckham before his decision and the other top players who are out there now, BWP, Keane etc ;)

I'm sure wifey had a say in it too.

Doesn't want to sit on the bench ever, still wants paid handsomely and probably would rather never compete against Liverpool, pretty obvious that there are many factors that makes his move to the MLS the most attractive. (Wife/still English speaking/weather/will still remain the man and more I'm sure/the real football)

The QoL in the US is far and above the level of Qatar for a start. Additionally it wouldn't be as big a culture shock as moving to say Serie A with the language barrier etc (would probably do very well in Italy). He also doesn't want to go to another team in the PL as he doesnt want to play against the team he has supported his whole life and not really being able to cope with the physical demands of the league.

America is a good choice, nice money, nice lifestyle and it helps the standard of football is lower.

Good luck to him.

perfect

Of course its about the $.

He will earna small fortune out there and have a good lifestyle for a few years and good luck to him. But ... all this pony like the inetrview is just that.

Yes sad to leave them but he is leaving beacsue he wont be a regular and they are offering a shedload of cash. Just say that instead of all this fake sentiment. No Liverpool fan would hold it against him after the years he has been there.

Most fans respect players for the way they leave, not the fact he left. Lampard and Ince are hated at West Ham because of the way they left. Parker sullied his ticket by not trying in the last few games and then engineering a move to Spurs when there were bigger offers. He is not hated but doesn't get the reception he would otherwise deserve.

So $teve. Tell the truth and keep the respect you have earnt in Liverpool.

Hes a hypocrite

Last season he said he would retire at Liverpool and never play for anyone else

Now because Rodgers wants to rest him for some games hes leaving
