Steven Gerrard leaving liverpool interview :(

I think Brenden Rogers dropped the ball and that Gerrad is being totally unrealistic if he thinks he can play every game in the PL at his age with European football and all the cup compeitions thrown in.

I can't recall who said it on Radio 5, Rogers should have told Gerrad what Fergie told Giggs and Scholes, that they are still an important part of the team and he will still get to play big games but he is not going to play every game week in week out.

Whether Rogers said that or not, we don't know, we do know that Gerrad do wants to play every week and that is just unrealistic. Add to the fact that he doesn't want to play against Liverpool, I think the natural choice is to the MLS. Nice weather (no winter games), good money, easier league, few games. I don't blame him.

Although who knows, if he joins the New York outfit that Lampard has signed for....we might see him in a Manchester City shirt next season...

I dont know maybe its just me but id take 75k a week to sit on a bench and watch top class football week in week out for free

Or go to LA (probably), likely have a better quality of life, will earn more money to top up his retirement fund and he'll get to play more footy which he clearly still loves doing. Sitting on a bench watching the team he loves isn't Gerrard.

Dont forget the 16 year old he was laying the sausage down with and got pregnant.

His wife's sister no less. You know, the sister she doesn't actually have.

I love these rumours.

Obviously no source will be provided.

Cos his kids not his and wife snorting coke off purple aki's Wang!

Purple Aki likes muscles not women. That rumour was actually spread by the doorman who's "wang" she was supposed to have snorted it off

I like how you instantly assume he didn't get offered more from an MLS team than that thus know it's not about the money. But more so is trying to compare Qatar... living and playing in extreme heat in a ridiculous league and in a situation in which many players have gone to for a huge contract and massively regretted it, to the MLS where players basically love it and the lifestyle.

Of the players who go to the MLS for money many see out their contracts fully, others only come back if they get a good offer or fancy some more competition but often it's a loan. Players have been not paid in Qatar, stuck in country, had passports taken away, players have zero power and no protection at all. It's not a "real" option to any sane person.

If I offered you 75k + 2 year contract at Liverpool, 150k + 3-4 year contract in the MLS, 175k + 2-3 year contract in Qatar. Which would you take for money and which would you take for footballing reasons?

If you posted this on the Sun/Dailymail/Liverpool forums/here as a pole 99% would take Liverpool for footballing reasons and MLS for money, almost no one would take Qatar despite being more.

EDIT:- ultimately you can be paid 150k a week in Qatar to play once a week and have very little else to do, or be paid 150k a week in the states and live somewhere where you can surf and hang out on fantastic beaches half the week or drive a couple hours inland and go skiing, hob knob with celebs at parties, functions, awards, loads of things, attend NBA/NFL games and generally live a millions times nicer lifestyle as you play. Living in the US as a rich and famous sports star and living in Qatar are so far removed from each other, one is a dream life, the other is pretty crappy.

well said.!

Are any Liverpool fans annoyed that Gerrard and Carragher are undermining Rodgers with their continual comments that not enough was done to keep him?

Carragher started it (and I suspect he was Gerrard's mouthpiece on this) and now Gerrard has come out and said it in an interview to the Liverpool Echo.

I think it leaves a sour taste in the mouth that Gerrard is being such a prima donna. He is old, Rodger (who I detest) has made the decision and Gerrard is destabilising the club & squad out of self interest.

Prima Donna and undermining Rodgers? ****ing hell.

It's very clear the point he was making. Last summer he quit England for the sole reason of prolonging his Liverpool career and at that moment had the contract been put in front of him he would have signed it. Between then and now things have changed and his role in the side wasn't what he hoped it would be and therefore his mindset regarding signing a new deal has changed too.

Why is it wrong of Gerrard for not wanting to accept being a bit part player and ending his Liverpool career sat on the bench? Every day we hear of other players, with far less legendary status at their clubs, wanting to leave because they're not happy with the amount of playing time they're getting.

Gerrard will be remembered as one of Liverpools greatest ever players and for that alone I fully understand why he wouldn't want to end his career making cameo appearances and getting dogs abuse from morons because he isn't the player he was.

I don't question the decision, I am questioning the continued drip feeding of comments that undermine Rodgers and the club. Silence would have been more dignified.

I don’t see anything wrong with how Gerrard, Rodgers or the club have handled it but the media angle of ‘Gerrard has been wronged’ / ‘the club have made a mistake’ is too easy to make news out of, so that is what they are pushing.

Gerrard says in the Echo interview that he wishes he had played under Rodgers sooner - that isn’t the sort of thing you say if you are just going through the motions. He has also acknowledged that while the conversations about his game time were difficult to have, he understood Rodgers position. Gerrard made his decision, informed the manager and they then timed the press release to minimise the impact on the team – doesn’t exactly scream of a rift between player and club does it?

Ultimately everyone has acted in their own best interests, player, manager and club – circumstances have changed since the summer and as a result we can no longer guarantee Gerrard a starting role but he still wants to play every week, which is fair enough but the only option left is for him to leave, and he is leaving in a way which has the least impact on the club. It is not a failing by either side, it is a simple case of two parties needs being so far apart that they can’t find a suitable compromise.

Sure, it’s not the fairytale ending Liverpool fans would like but equally it could have ended a lot worse, so personally I’ll take it and just be thankful if he doesn't end up at another PL club.
