Who actually reads the daily mail ?

My dad buys it because apparently its got the best Horse Racing pages in the back, or something?

I don't know if thats the real reason, but he also reads the rest of it and his opinions are clearly influenced by it. Utter garbage.

I read the website - mostly the headlines, skim through the article then chuckle at the comments...

they also have regular bikini pics of random 'celebs'... makes for interesting lunchtime browsing

It used to be one of the sites I visited for sports news but it changed to being more about selfies of footballers or photos of them with their latest model girlfriend. When I'm looking at the sports section I want actual sports news, so I use other sites now.

As for the rest of the site, it just seems to focus on articles aimed at winding people up and generating hits, which I really can't be bothered with.

The lower class read it.

Not true. I would say the Mail has a readership firmly planted in the aspirational C1 and C2 social groups, and well off housewives.

My mother in law.

Mine too. She's classic Mail reader. Interested in current affairs, but to lazy to actually do much reading. The Mail gives her a sense that she's "informed" :(

I sometimes look through my mother's Mail when I'm there, and it rarely seems any more objectionable or outspoken than the average internet forum, where folk are all too eager to judge and pillory others.

Agreed. It has a strong middle- to upper-middle class appeal. My wife's aunt also reads it, and she's a rich widow in Tring who owns a Rothschild cottage.

My mother in law is also middle class, though she disappointed her family by marrying a working class husband.

To quote the awesome "Yes Minister"

Sir Humphrey: The only way to understand the Press is to remember that they pander to their readers' prejudices.

Jim Hacker: Don't tell me about the Press. I know *exactly* who reads the papers. The Daily Mirror is read by the people who think they run the country. The Guardian is read by people who think they *ought* to run the country. The Times is read by the people who actually *do* run the country. The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country. The Financial Times is read by people who *own* the country. The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by *another* country. The Daily Telegraph is read by the people who think it is.

Sir Humphrey: Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?

Bernard Woolley: Sun readers don't care *who* runs the country - as long as she's got big ****

My Mum.

as soon as she hit 60 its like someone switched on her racist xenophobe module.

Ah the token smart ass comment, somehow i don't think my occasional broswing out of intrigue accounts for the many millions of hits it gets everyday from around the world.

but most people are occasional browsers, I end up there because of links from here so that adds a +1 to the tally.

It's the most popular news website in the world by some distance and yet I've never met a single person in my life who reads it, quite the opposite... It seems to be universally despised.

Who actually reads it and more importantly why ? Everytime I've browsed it all I see is fear mongering and lots of hatred and bitterness in the comments section.

By saying you have never met a single person who reads is it says more about you and the company you keep.
