Grinding with a cargo ship is the quickest way, but to get to where I am now i've done plenty of the following;

Mining (made about 10 million)
Missions for the empire, ranking and reputation
Bulletin board missions
Assassinations
bounty hunting
trading

If you rank up with a faction, the bulletin board missions start paying out 300k-400k quests for mundane stuff, so theoretically you could make plenty this way.

Are there any benefits for ranking up with the Federation or Empire, other than permits and access to ships? Do they offer paying missions too, or is it just factions that do that?

Dear Lord, the more I read about this game design, the more I never want to get into it, and I am a space sim fan who has played just about everything over the years.

Weeks of monotonous and uneventful grinding to get any major upgrade seems standard, and is my life so dull that I want to put so many hours of my free time into making cargo runs? It just seems so incredibly pointless.

I think that they plan to introduce new ships that fit between the current line up.

The Type7 is the only cargo ship that sits between the <10million and the 50million + levels.

The clipper has a similar cargo capacity and is a far more capable mixed role ship but that is only open to Imperial ranks of Baron or above.

The game will fill these gaps over time it's just beginning days.

Any of you lot want to test this Roccat Power Grid out? You'll probably have to redo the keys the functions are bound to but this is it on my Galaxy S4, it's actually made more for 7" tablets though.

The PAGAN logo can be replaced by an Elite one which should be in the package (based off a grid MaxzUK made). I'll be making changes to it over the next few days, probably going to make the buttons carbon fibre next as I quite like the icons.

Yes, once you get to a count or earl (can't remember) with the empire, you'll find much bigger missions appearing in the bulletin board, I was doing missions for the Empire party and empire league.

Thanks,

I'm ranking with the Federation atm, I assume it will be the same.

Bounty hunting the whales.

First, the Python - probably the best all round ship in the game:-

And then the Anaconda - the largest ship in the game, bristling with 8 weapon hardpoints - stay out of the way of the Plasma Accelerator mounted on the front else it's game over:-

Apologies for Lord of the Rings dialogue in the background - forgot to change the recording settings!

I'm using powergrid quite successfully now, I started with someone elses template and as I've become more familiar with the tools I'm using, I've adapted it to suit my own requirements.

I've recently moved my thrusters to the POV switch which is why SYS, WEAP and ENG are on the Grid

I'm using a 10" Moto Xoom for mine :D

I'm sticking with my Cobra, I see absolutely no point making this game a press X to win type in a tricked out Python/Anaconda.

Trading is boring
Mining is boring
Exploring is boring
Combat is at least fun, take that away and I have nothing. ;)

But when they get wings/MP sorted out, hopefully this month, condas will not be a problem when 2 or 3 of you gang up on one. Unless the Anaconda has his own mates in support vessels, then combat will be fun :D

Still in my Cobra tinkering with different weapon loadouts and have about 12m in assets, still pondering whether to get n Asp or not.

If your going to do a bit of trading get an asp, makes much more sense than a Lacon6 as it can have more cargo space and its bad *** :) just costs a fortune to repair if it takes damage

Thing is, I've been hammering around in Vipers and Cobras since July, I've done tonnes of PVP around Freeport in the beta/gamma and killed endless stuff in the small ships,

For me the whole idea behind trading first started with me wanting a clipper, and then I actually found the process of getting the best trade route - using the various tools, going to different systems to find the best profit, or searching for rares very interesting and slightly addictive..

Now i'm in a badass Python and tbh - after 3-4 hours grinding a trade route did get pretty dull, I'll agree with that, but equipping a big ship with 30M worth of big guns and equipment was well worth it imo..

you can get 128T if your willing to risk taking the sheild generator out of it! as I said not much good for combat like that thou as the repair bill will be awful :p

I was in a Type 6 until today :)
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=79809

Now in an Asp with 12T more Cargo. (112T in total)
Sweeeeet ^.^

EDIT - Have a tricked out Viper for shooty-shooty :)

Asp + shield cells. Only problem I have in combat now are those damn authority vessels flying through my lasers!

I'm worth about 22 mill at the moment, will probably stick with the Asp for a fair bit longer, see what other ships they put out.

My asp was set up with shield cells, 2 beam lasers to take down shields and 4 multi-cannon to kill hulls. It was almost too easy 'vs' any medium/small sized ship.

I see the python as just a bigger version of the asp - multi role and good at most things.

Sounds like my exact config :D

Asp is a stepping stone to the......... Type 7 :P

Likely then T9, keeping one combat capable ship for killing stuff.
Whether I move from the Viper for combat until the T9 we'll see :)
