it baffles me that i applied for a position that is 10 mins from my house the job description reads like my C.V. and i don't even get selected for an interview :(

people are saying im over qualified, i don't buy it they want a Senior and im definately that lol

/rant over

anyone else had this problem?

Which "people" are saying you're overqualified?

Maybe you applied for a job where they had a preferred internal or friendly candidate they were always going to go with?

this probably. They have to advertise it, but there's only ever going to be one candidate

Post your cv and the job spec.

My experience from working in recruitment taught me that many many people think they are a perfect shoe in for a role when realistically they are not even close.

Not saying this is the case for you, but after hearing it day in day out it was more often than not the case.

agree 100% ^

About half the jobs here which I've seen which go onto our external vacancy page have already got somebody pegged for the job - just the external process is to tick a box with HR.

It sucks, but sadly there isn't always something you can do about it. Secondly being able to determine if a CV matches a job-spec require skills, which the person in charge may not posses.

Recruitment consultants in my experience (if it's related to anything other than a basic role) are terrible at this - as they don't have any experience in the jobs they are selecting people for (so can't determine if the skills are actually related or not).

Simply by having modelling in my CV, I get put forward to 3d graphics design jobs, risk modelling & jobs related to building models in VBA. I actually work in predictive modelling which is more statistical in nature - but clearly the consultants miss the context of the term. It's possible either of the above have set you back.

I read recently that only around 20% of positions are advertised. Many are filled by friends and family on recommendation.

Some places have to advertise vacancies but like you said the candidate has already been chose.

When I was job searching I found a lot of people working their notice didn't actually end up leaving their position. They had in fact resigned in a last ditch effort to negotiate better pay/conditions.

Happened to me a couple of times after being offered a position only to find out a week before I was due to start the person I was replacing had retracted their notice.

I wouldn't take it personally this is probably just one of the adverts chucked out to keep HR happy when they knew who they were getting all along. Just a shame they waste peoples' time.

Sounds like they have a shoe in to be honest.

I have personally been strung along until the final interview only for the head of programme's cousin to be given a job totally unqualified for, so at least they let you down early!
