I'll caveat this by being open in saying I'm not particularly religious, nor an expert on terrorism, religion or nationalism so I speak with no weight to my words than other than as a uninformed "average bloke".
Firstly it would be remiss of me to not say my thoughts and condolences are with the victims, their families and the people effected by this shameful act, in France and those globally who will inevitably suffer from the backlash. I dare say Muslims around the world are sat with their hands in their heads right now despairing and angry that these "people" could do this in their name and try to alienate them from friends, colleagues and neighbours.
I can see and understand how an immediate response to this atrocity would be "OMG Islam again", and let's be honest Islamic leaders have done very little to build bridges and repair that perception over the last few years.
Having said that to look at this act of barbarism and paint all Muslims with the same brush would be akin to painting all Christians or at least Catholics as responsible for the acts of brutal mass murder carried out by the catholic based Irish republican army in Britain in the 60's, 70's and 80's. These acts of terrorism arguably exceed anything carried out by Islamic extremists in the UK and yet despite some generalisations about "the Irish" few people cried out that all Christianity should be held responsible. It's an understandable reaction of immediate anger to lash out, particularly when it's easy to point at something you don't wholly understand and generalise, but I think we all know when we take a breath it just doesn't stack up in the cold light of day.
Having said that, fairly or not, the Islamic community and leaders have a responsibility to take a response into their own hands, condemn the actions of these extremists and be categoric in their rejection of their means and actions. A clear statement form the Islamic community leaders around the world saying these barbaric individuals will get no succour or safe harbour from any genuine Muslim, Islamic state or organisation would go a long way to build the bridges between communities that we are all, Muslim, Christian, Agnostic anything else, of the same mind in rejecting these acts of terrorism carried out in the name of religion.
Perhaps a Fatwa issued ruling these terrorists act in defiance to the teachings of Islam and the prophet would be a reasonable start - they may continue to be nutters with an agenda but take away their desperately needed justification of creditability as defenders of Islam? At this point my sadly lacking knowledge of Islam lets me down so I don't know if that could even be possible. I suppose the Catholic equivalent would have been excommunication, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I will be able to say more on that point.
Hopefully I've not offended anyone on what is a very emotive and raw subject, I just thought I'd add my 2c...
