It turns out HTC are working on an M8 successor code named the Hima.

It's expected to be announced at MWC 2015 in March and released shortly thereafter.

If HTC continue their successful recipe (see One M7 and M8) then I see no reason why the M9 Hima won't also be very successful.

So far the specs are rumoured to have:
  • Octa-core processor with 4 Cortex-A57 cores at 2.0GHz and 4 Cortex-A53 cores at 1.5GHz
  • Adreno 430 GPU
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 16, 32 and 64GB storage options
  • 7mm thick
  • 13Mp front and 20.7Mp rear camera
  • 2840mAh battery

I expect the chassis will support the fantastic machined metal design.

What's the XDA and development support like for the M7 and M8? I was considering the Z4 but a likely locked bootloader and minimal support put me off. Happy about the supposed 1080p screen, would much rather have a longer battery than 1440p!

The M8 is fairly good as HTC allow relatively easy bootlosder unlocking. Also the fact that there's the Google Play Edition M8 which allows very easy development (it's essentially a Nexus).

Sony are very involved with the developer community. They've posted AOSP code for all of their newer devices online for example.

But then they do weird things like break camera features if you unlock the bootloader.

I can't recall either companies' warranty policy on unlocked bootloaders but I suspect the process voids the warranty, which is stupid.

Compared to past HTC devices, it's pretty much as easy as a Nexus device now. You do need to go to the HTC developer site to get your bootloader unlocked, but the process is pretty quick and easy.

Looking foward to this phone as well, glad they're staying with 5" 1080p, I hardly saw any difference comparing my M7's screen with a friend's G3. I'm glad they're dropping the Ultrapixel camera as well, I initially thought I would be fine with it but then I started to take more photos...

Where did you hear the 7mm thick rumour? Last time I checked rumours was pointing it to be actually slightly thicker than the M8 (9.56mm): http://upleaks.info/2014/12/22/htc-hima/

Dimension: 144.3 x 69.4 x 9.56 mm
Snapdragon 810 2.0GHz Quad-core + 1.5GHz Quad-core
3GB RAM
5″ FHD Display
Supports VoLTE(Voice Over LTE), Carrier Aggrication(Malaysian/Indian model doesn’t support this), LTE Category 6
20.7MP Main Camera
13MP Front Camera
2840mAh Battery
Android 5.0
Sense 7.0
Color: Dark Gunmetal/Dark Gunmetal, Silver/Golden, Golden/Golden, Dark Gunmetal/Golden
Launch: March 2015
Official Accessory: Active Headset, DotView, DecoStand Case, Clear Case, Active Case, Premium Screen Protector

I just hope the 810 overheating problems aren't true or already fixed...

EDIT: Also, China (and other price sensitive areas) may use a MediaTek SoC to keep costs down: http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_hima_may_employ_a_mediatek_soc_at_least_in_china-news-10668.php

Hopefully the size is not stupid like the M8 and HTC has finally stopped faffing around with the camera. On paper it seems like the phone of 2015. Meh still a tad too tall but getting better I guess.

I'm already sold on this, given that HTC's re emergence has been driven by the design and build quality (god I sound like an apple user don't I?) I can't see them changing the basic recipe for their flagship.

Things like the cpu/ram etc really don't do much for me, I'm pretty sure the ones currently used by the M8 will be fine for the next two years anyway, I can't fault the quality of the screen and we all know how good the audio out on the M8 is.

The camera was the one let down, if that get's amended in the M9 I'm all over it like butter on hot toast!

Oh and the next iteration of Sense / Lollipop has a lot to live up to as it's pretty much spot on now, if it aint broke don't screw it up.

For that it needs at least OIS and 32GB onboard storage (and OLED for me)

The whole A57+A53 combo is a bit crap. tHE A57's are relatively power hungry and hot - Qualcomm is using these off the shelf cores because they were caught with their pants down when Apple's A7 was released. Qualcomms custom 64bit cores wont be ready till next year.

This is what I'm worried about, Qualcomm may have rushed the 810s just to get on the 64-bit boat. Some people did a few benchmarks on the LG Flex 2 that uses the 810 and it seems to do worse than the 805, due to throttling. The CPU cores don't even reach 2GHz due to the throttling: http://www.androidauthority.com/snapdragon-810-overheating-issues-579284/

However, some other hands-on articles seems to show it to perform just fine: http://www.gsmarena.com/ces_2015_lg-review-1187p3.php

So it's either due to LG's unfinished software, the ones being shown in CES taking a bit of beating from all the reviewers, or there are some 810s with overheating problems. Samsung seems to have A57/A53 working fine, so it's either Qualcomm with a rushed design or TSMC having problems with 20nm (which seems unlikely seeing as the A8 is made on TSMC's 20nm).

I wish you had the choice to either use on screen style buttons or off screen like the 1+1 has. Hate phones with onscreen buttons. A reason I stick with Samsung and on a note 4.

I can't stand them waste of screen space, hiding and bringing them back is annoying on apps. Look at the M8 big oversized needless bezel, we should have the option of both.
