would you guys say a r9 290 is better than a 970?

which card do you guys prefer? and why?

they are around the same price, so im a bit stuck for choice.

currently running on a dell u2711 at 1440p

ps

also I might get the asus gsync 1440 p monitor which has 144 hurzt.

They are both very similar in terms of in game performance, but the 970 is just newer and thus considerably more efficient.

My 970 still surprises me at how it just handles most games with ease (although at 1080p) while still staying so cool.

If you possibly may get a gsync monitor then the 970 is the obvious choice.

970 due to lower temps and good overclocking potential plus as said its new tech compared to the 290 which will soon be knocked off top and spot by upcoming 390 cards.

Some problems with coil whine on some 970 cards though but ocuk do one thats guaranteed not to have any :)

They are not at the same price - an R9 290 can be had for about £240 (Asus Direct CU), whereas the 970 costs £270 - £280.

You can get a 290x for £275, which should be a bit faster than the 970.

I've had Crossfire and I've now got SLI reference OcUK 970's and I'd recommend going via the 290 Crossfire route.
While some games run superbly some have notable problems eg Dragon Age Inquisition and Shadows of Mordor which doesn't seem to want to use the full 4GB VRAM and when it does it makes the fps drop.
I only had Crossfire for about 3 weeks before I sold off my other card as I was planning on trying out SLI but I do feel it had more grunt, also my single 290 at 1440 had no trouble in maxing out 4GB VRAM.

ok my friend when is the new 390 cards being released?

If you wer buying would you hold off until the 390 releases or would you just dive in a 290/x 970

Im finding it difficult to make a decision as Im a AMD fan, always had their cards from the 5870s to 5970 to 7970, never had a probleb, but the nvdia cards have so much more technology such as all this:

- NVIDIA® Super Resolution technology
- NVIDIA® GameWorks technology
- NVIDIA® GameStream technology
- NVIDIA® TXAA Technology
- NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0
- NVIDIA PhysX® Technology
- NVIDIA FXAA Technology
- NVIDIA Adaptive Vertical Sync
- NVIDIA Surround
- Microsoft DirectX 12
- NVIDIA® 3D Vision® Ready
- NVIDIA SLI® Ready Technology
- NVIDIA CUDA® technology
- PCI Express 3.0 support
- NVIDIA SHIELD Ready
- NVIDIA G-Sync Ready

The AMD cards don't have as much, and it does not support the upcoming DX12, I usually keep my cards for 2-3 years before upgrading so if I get a 290, Im gonna miss out on dx12.

The 290 will support Dx12

really?

Ive had a look at the sites and it shows 290 as DX11.2, unless theres a driver updates that makes it go to DX12, not sure if that will work...

But googling the 390, it could take a good few months before releasing, maybe 6 months? also to consider is the prices, which may be above my budget.

might as well make a choice on a 970 or a 290.

From what I've read the 290/x will support the LLA part of DX12 which is the bit we're all interested in for games but it won't have all DX12 features.

It seems that bridgeless crossfire is currently a better performer than SLI so for a dual card set up that would be the option. However it would be via waiting for a 390/x.

I wouldn't dream of getting a 290/x so close to the 300 series release, Even if it is 3 or 4 months away I'd still wait if you have a card that works at the moment, I've been wanting to replace my problematic 290x for several months but I know if I do it now I'll soon be kicking myself so I'm giving AMD the chance to redeem itself by waiting for the 390x's details before I decide what way to go.

ok, so how much do you think a 390 will be priced at? approx?

They trade blows depending on games you are comparing it on but the general consensus goes with the 970 being newer and generally good overclockers.

I guess it ultimately falls down to what features interest you the most, do you want Freesync or Gsync etc?

honestly i was looking at a 4k monitor but after reading feedback from users i might as well get the nvdia gsync monitors, currently using a 1440p dell u2711 monitor, the dilemma is that I buy 1 970 or a 290, but some people say to wait for the 390 as its only a few months away, issue is if the 390s are too expensive then I ll have to do with the 290 to which Ive waited for nothing, and as prices fall for the 290 I might be able to go xfire if I get a 290 for 200 quid a pop.

Tech moves so fast its too fast for my wallet.

290s can be had for £215 on amazon - Sapphire Tri-X and Asus DCU2. 970s, lowest I've seen is about £260 on **** iirc. Can't remember the brand though.

well im gonna sell my 7970 msi lightning, how much shud i price it as, only coz the 280s are a cheap buy, and a 7970 is more powerful, its just below the 7970 in specs, i paid 390 when i got it new, how much would you sell a msi 7970 lightning if u had it?

I'm going to sell mine too. Was thinking about 130-150 quid.
