Advice on Ice/Snow Driving

Do not brake too harshly and then you most definitely should not steer to try and fix the impending doom.

70 mph on a snow laden dual carriage way on winters & AWD great fun :)

This is the problem with winters they grip really well but when they let go - THEY LET GO. Still need to be wary.

Not sure how many times - I have used winter tyres, decent branded winter tyres too not some no make rubbish so videos like the above absolutely will not change my opinion.

They're good on snow and slush. They are definitely a bit better on extremely hard, icy surfaces but they simply cannot do everything for you. The only things that are going to stop you quickly or give decent control on that sort of surface are studded tyres.

How often do you find yourself driving along an ice rink where the surface is of a fairly constant level of traction? How often do you find yourself suddenly hitting a very, very icy patch which then has another type of surface straight after it that may have been covered by fresh snow or the likes when it does actually snow heavily here? That's about the only thing that I can think will make the difference, because my experience does not match that video. Definitely better, but ot some wonderful solution

I'm not saying they are as good as studded but you can see they will help on ice compared to summer tyres. Or to put it another way, it allows a bmw to go up hills in snow and ice:p

Buy an Evo and chose this mode.

Doesn't help at all on ice/snow.

Aside from the cool points you get from having it in the first place, all the ACD mode really does is based on some variables (including whether the hand brake is on or not :D) it alters how aggressive the clamping behaviour is of the centre diff.

Moreso appropriate for managing higher speed powerslides etc. which you aren't going to be doing too much on the way to Asda in minor snow conditions :p

Of course, with mine wearing AD08's the 4 wheels seem to spin equally nicely when stationary in any of the ACD modes :(:D

I must go and get that car at some point!

I've been looking at Evo's again, specifically another IX!

Seen my old one for sale, for more than I sold it. Then realised all prices have gone up.

This is a great video if you want to see what not to do. It starts off and you think "yeah, fair enough, I'd probably have made the same mistake" and quickly progresses to "what the actual **** were they thinking?" :p

And you would know this how? I passed many cars going up various hills where people were trying to go up a hill or had simply abandoned their cars and given up. I smiled at a few BMW drivers as I passed them.

But it's not all about traction. I had the same experience in my R32 with UHP summer tyres on.....smug driving past people stuck on hills but stopping was a whole different story! :)

Because I owned an Evo IX and drove it in icy conditions? The ACD setting made next to **** all difference. It's a setting intended for rallying on snow/ice with studded tyres, not for getting to work with road legal tyres.

The AWD of the car however does make a small difference, but it is not above the laws of physics.

That's why it's a snow mode, not an ice mode? I've noticed a slight difference because we've had snow for nearly a week now so I've had plenty of chances to try it out.

Where's that M3 vs Subaru video where the M3 has winter tires on and happily pulls away and stop going uphill and down?

AWD is only as good as the tires.

*Edit*

'MURICAAA! Just... Wow... How do people get it that wrong?!

I'm not sure who's my favourite - the old Ford truck who decides to just boot it straight at the stationary cars, the cars which decide to attempt the road three abreast, or the Crown Vic who decides that maximum throttle and opposite lock is going to somehow improve the situation :p

Ill just post this here and you can say how little grip there is on ice:rolleyes:

Pretty impressed with the winter tyre performance there - I've been skeptical until now but colour me converted!

If I didn't live by the coast I'd consider getting a set of winter tyres.

They are really good. Liek really really good. And they also grip (obviously at a reduced level) even on ice.
