Samsung 256GB SSD 850

install the SSD like you do a HDD but make sure its connected to a sata 3 (6 gbps) port and that you have the sata ports set to ACHI and not IDE

the Samsung drives come with cloning software so you can clone your current HDD and restore it to your SSD.

once the system is cloned disconnect all HDDs and restore the image to the SSD with only this drive connected, make sure the SSD is set as your primary boot drive as well.

I have the same make but a 840, great drives

failing that if there is nothing you need off it do a clean install of windows and then connect the HDD as a second drive and copy anything off it

Thank you ED209, I suppose its best to do a clean install.

Thank you.

i have always done a clean install when getting a new HDD or SSD because i don't keep anything on the OS disk that requires backing up as i just install it again once back in to windows.

what OS are you currently using?

Cloning it should work fine if the HDD has a modern OS on it. I believe since Windows 7 all installations are partitioned at 1 MiB boundaries even on HDDs, which is compatible with SSD alignment.

If not there are a few applications out there that can adjust SSD alignment to be optimal.

Is data storage mighty important for you on that SSD? It's probably the most reliable if that's important, but it's quite expensive for 256GB, the same size can be had for half the price and I doubt you'd notice a performance different massively, if at all - the 850 Evo is also great and cheaper
