DX12 news-Windows 10 upgrade free for owners of Windows 7 and 8.1

Conspiracy theory...

Nvidia did some sort of deal with M$ to make this a free Windows upgrade, to try and completely kill Mantle (albeit DirectX is not owed by Nvidia, but M$).

If everyone had to pay for Windows 10, relatively few would upgrade quickly, so many would not have DX12...

Mantle would get a better chance to get a foothold and AMD would get a chance to improve their share of the market.

If anyone thinks that, they've gone beyond the realms of fanboyism.

Haha really?? I'm sure Microsoft has a 1000 more important reasons to wanting Windows 10 to grow through having it free than Mantle.

They've done it to avoid all the Win 7 users sticking with Win 7 and nuking the Win 8/8.1 market share as a result. They want everyone on Win 10, so they probably have some subscription model type deal in the pipeline to introduce when the year is up.

I myself am sticking with Win 7 unless Win 10 is a huge performance improvement or they launch a DX12 game I actually want to play. I don't care about Cortana or the new IE, none of the new features really tempt me, and Win 7 works perfectly fine for me.

unless they drop support in the near future for win7 like xp,then you wont have much choice

if its a free upgrade why wouldn't you?

Nah, the Illuminati made them do it, to turn the tide of the war against the Lizard Kingdom, who all use Linux.

Sir, you are a voice of reason. I salute you. :)

Namely because of potential compatibility problems on the software level, why would I change if I'm happy as I am? Sure it's free, but that doesn't mean I should upgrade for the sake of upgrading. I'll have a year to assess Win 10 before the free upgrade ends, and allow MS to fix any major bugs and problems.

But that's really down to the fault of the software developers not MS changing their OS.

It doesn't matter to me whose fault it is, Win 7 works perfectly fine for me, meaning I'm at no obligation to upgrade, no matter what the cost is. I have no idea why some posters are shilling Win 10 so much, why does it matter so much if I choose not to upgrade right away? It has no effect on your desktop experience nor should it have any bearing on what others choose to do.

I have perused the new Win 10 features and frankly I see nothing that wows me, I have no use for Cortana, I don't give one iota what the new IE will be like and until a DX12 game releases there's no benefit there either. So allow me to sit and wait and if I'm missing out, who cares?

I do too (salute the following).......

I have not yet installed Windows Hate on any PC that I`ve built, and I`ve directed laptop purchasers to models that are sold with Windows 7. A few customers have got machines with Windows 8, and most of them don't like it much.

Windows 8 is quite good on my phone though, although it does lack the app support of Android and the other one.

There isn't a when the year is up. You just need to upgrade in the first year. You get a proper copy for free. It's to stop fragmentation, increase user base, which will increase devlopers, which will mean more money from OneDrive, office 365, app store, Xbox movies/music etc.

So I was right, but my reasons were off, fair enough.

Windows 8.1 is a wonderful thing,I ditched win7 on my other PC few months back had 0 issues on two machine's

Once you get used to it its fab, just hope its the same again for win 10

Win 7 does look and feel slower now,if your happy as you are then fair play but I think I'll upgrade again only because its free and for dx12
