4K Gaming

Right guys I currently have

Xeon 1230v3
8GB RAM
Sapphire R9 290

running a acer 4k monitor.

currently playing elite dangerous, H1Z1, LOL, payday 2, war thunder games like that.

Do also play bf4.

I currently get 90fps in elite on High with AA turned off but when in station thats drops to around 30 and the card starts getting really hot 85+.

What card do you reckon will be a decent upgrade?

I know I will need a new gpu really so will be budgeting for a 1,000w PSU first.

So far i'm thinking

R9 295X2 as it seems to be the biggest performance gain.

How would 2 X 970's performe against this?

GTX Titan?

or wait until the next gen ATI are released?

Thanks.

As you already have a 290P if you need to upgrade now adding a second 290P would be the way to go.

Using 4K with the settings turned up does tend to make graphics card draw more power and produce more heat as a result. If it is more than a few degrees then you need to look at your case air flow.

The other short term option is to sell your 290P and get a 295X2 as this will give about the same performance as 290P CF but with the benefit that the 295X2 will dump most of it's heat straight out the case via the rad.

If you are getting 85c on the 290 then adding another will turn your case into an oven. I am using a single BGT980 for 4K and I am happy to compromise on graphics settings until a single card allows me to increase the detail.

was debating a 980, uses less power and produces less heat

What kind of fanspeed is your 290 Tri-X on?

Could it be a simply case of that for some reason it is not spinning at the higher speed?

If it is airflow issue with the case, even if you got a 980, it would still mean your 980 would be 5-10C higher than other peoples' 980, like your 290 Tri-X is comparing to other peoples' 290 Tri-X.

well the memory is average around 2.5 - 3gb on shadow of mordar using medium settings so memory is not the problem .
Yea. As long as you keep the memory usage below 3.5GB there shouldn't be a problem.

If you do get performance issue when memory usage hit 3.5GB or above, try reducing some graphic settings to reduce the usuage below and it should be fine.

980 is decent for 4K as long as you can tolerate compromising on full details. Most graphics settings in games I hate anyway, such as DOF, Motion Blur, Bloom etc. So disabling those gives me plenty of power to get decent FPS at 4K.

I was playing bad company 2 Vietnam in 4K last night. It was glorious

Sorry to jump on here.
I justed started playing bc2 again last night also.
I have 2x 290's, but so stuttery, not sure why. Bf4 runs fine.
Such a fun game. What spec you got.
Just wondering if it's Windows 8, as I used to play in Windows7.

right decided i'm gonna get a 980 might as well get the best single gpu i can instead of messing with sli / crossfire atm.

I have a corsair 300R case so airsoft isnt really a problem atm cpu never goes above about 45C.

As for settings yes i don't mind playing on high instead of ultra with things like bloom, motion blur and AA cranked right down.

X99 Asus Rampage Extreme V.
X79 Asus Rampage Extreme VI
Asus P8Z77 WS Deluxe

There may be more, but that's all i can think of off hand.

I'm thinking of going to 5960X, X99 Asus Rampage Extreme V, and hope it lasts a good 2 years + at least.
At least i can use 16x and 4th slot @8x.. not much in it 16x v8x, so not much of a loss!
Does the 5960X help in anyway @4k?

Cheers ;)
