Benedict Cumberbatch OUTRAGE!!!

I can understand why some people find the term coloured offensive as it tends to group all non white people together, it was also heavily used during the racist time of segregation.
(people claiming to not know its offensive must have been living under a rock, it's been generally accepted as offensive for over a decade!!)

I can't understand that given that 'people of colour' is widely acceptable yet does the same thing.

I really think it is more the historical baggage associated with 'coloured' than anything else.

I in my previous life worked with a very old, very set in his ways Senior Prison Officer.

Whilst talking to a young black man he told him to go and speak to the and I quote "coloured officer over there" - I narrowly missed the metal container flying through the air in our direction.

How we managed to get him out of the area without getting battered I will never know but we did. Luckily for him and us we did and managed the calm the situation down.

He genuinely though that saying "black person" was worse than saying "coloured person".

You are correct. Directly it doesn't. I was referring the the paragraph concerning Alan Hansen and the others with the implication that it is, and following those links, further comments.

When I was at school coloured was acceptable black was racist.

It's not really something you talk about unless you are racist so how are you supposed to know apparently it's changed now...

The whole thing is ridiculous

We should start using hex codes to describe skin colour. Surely they can't complain about that :p?

And why is the code for the whitest face suspiciously similar to paedo!

Well his in the minority I'm afraid as the majority of black people find being called 'coloured' offensive. (Understandable given the history)

So people have two options here, either carry on offending people and using the term or be civilized and use and un-offensive term which isn't related to a disgusting part of our history!!

Why do we give a flying hoot if people get offended?

Oh no, you're offended, is the world going to end because of it? NO! Man up, Move on!

The correct thing is to alter your behaviour and use the non-offensive term which is what any reasonable person would do.

I disagree with the outrage particularly in this circumstance.

Whats your opinion on the 'mixed race' one though? That one I thought was ridiculous

I can't help but notice there appears to be certain groups in all types of human's who use "the past" as an excuse as to why they fail now or why they need assistance to win now.

If you notice pretty much all the successful people in these groups do not dwell on the past.

No offence to any one or multiple groups of Human's is meant by the above statement, it is merely my observations.

I agree with the fact that 'coloured' isnt accurate, white is a colour as well after all, but that part about not using mixed race is ridiculous. Mixed race is a very accurate and non offensive term

Probably every description will offend one set of people.

I get why people might be more offended at coloured though. We are all coloured, so for someone using coloured as a descriptor sets him or herself as the default standard, I am normal, the rest of you not like me are coloured.

I suppose you just have to be aware of where you are, Coloured is ok in the UK, not in America. Black seems to be the safe word for America.

It's all about context and intent, in friendly personal conversation my black mate calls me a 'sheep shagger' due to me being welsh, I refer to him as 'the help' (only when he's in a good mood mind! ;))

People just need to get over themselves, different language for different social situations, is it really that hard to grasp? For the general media, obviously so.

Meh, everyone sprinting to say it shouldn't have caused offence.

It was a silly word to use. However, he was ignorant of the implications and has since apologised, so its completely fine. Good on him.

But it was a silly word to use.

I think it's become a story because he's gone so completely overboard in his apology. You'll notice much of the commentary is around what he has called himself ('idiot' etc) rather than the term he innocently used.
