My main storage drive which I use for photos, music and movies is slowly dying. I need to replace it with something new before it dies completely...

1). Are SSHD reliable?
2). SSHD seem better in terms of price/performance ratio, true or marketing BS?

I'm looking at 1TB possibly 2TB depending on the price, I don't want to go over £100.

For storage, get a hard drive. It will be fast enough for your needs. You can get a 3TB one for that money.

SSDs and SSHDs are good for storing software (such as your OS), or for specialized uses (like adding them in 4k cameras).

3TB would be a waste for me IMO, SSHD seems like good value. But I just don't believe in its reliability/practicality...

P.s. It would be great to get someone's opinion who currently uses an SSHD.

I use an SSHD for storage, only reason is I got it off the MM brand new for the same price as a new 2TB HDD.

I don't rate it all that much, program launching etc doesn't seem much faster, possibly a bit but not much. I'd take small SSD (120GB ish) + HDD over SSHD any day as in the real world that will be much faster for booting etc

For your uses an SSHD won't be faster than a traditional HDD as it'll not know what movie you're going to pick before you do so the caching will give you nothing. Get an HDD.

demon8991 absolutely nailed it.

As painful as it is spending more on a product that can be had for similarly cheaper. It's eye watering when a HDD dies unexpectedly. The WD reds are about the best on the market.

I agree. If you don't need 2 TB for your files, bet 1 x 1TB and mirror (RAID 1) them for security. Most motherboards have this option, and if yours doesn't you can do this is Windows.

In terms of speed as well? I can get SSHD 2TB for 79.99 :D

The speed differences are not visible between the various types of HDDs. An SSHD might be a bit faster for booting, but you mentioned that you won't be using the HDD as a boot drive. Also, it's pretty new technology so it's not as tried and tested as standard HDDs (IMO).

WD Red drives are designed for Network Attached Storage setups, which are designed to run for extended periods of time with relatively poor cooling. While not a given, they promise better reliability.

Forget the old mechanical HD's get something like a Western Digital My Passport 1.0TB or 2.0TB USB 3.0 Titanium External Hard Drive far better.:)

My PC is SSD only now 256GB 830 OS+Apps, 500GB 840 Game's and a Western Digital My Passport 1.0TB USB 3.0 Titanium External Hard Drive for backup+storage.

It does, ASUS P8Z68-V Rev. B3 :)

Are you referring to the Seagate SSHDs? I looked in to them recently because the price seemed so low and the cache on them is so small it barely makes them any faster than HDDs. A quick Google for reviews and benchmarks will confirm.

I'd suggest just sticking with regular spinners
