90 sounds ok, cards with that performance brand new (280X) are at very best selling for £180 and I don't think I've ever seen a 770 under £190..... actually I don't see many 770s at all now.

I'm in the same boat. I have been recommended the 970 but with the rampage and the coil whine issues I just can't commit.

One 680 or 670 should be good for most games at good detail settings at 1080p. The two are actually quite close in terms of performance so if you can get a 670 for much cheaper it may be the better option. See benchmarks below:

£90 does seem reasonable, even if its a stock design exhaust type cooler it shouldn't be to loud.

Who knows, overclocking is all luck of the draw...

Would also depend on what model? Some 680 reference inno 3D will most likely not clock as well as a 680 Classified...not to mention noise levels.

The extra GB of VRAM on the 7950 could potentially help on some more memory hungry games, especially if you want to run higher texture type mods.

I'm still rocking a MSi 680 lightning at the moment at 2560x1440 and it manages ok for the most part. Up until recently I was playing at 1920x1200 and it still played everything really well.

I guess it's all subjective and some will say nothing less than GTX 980 SLi even for 1920x1080

If you intend on over clocking to the Max the 7950's have proper voltage control.

680's are voltage locked so if you get a poor clocker your stuck really.

Would have thought for 90ish you could get a 7970 and then its a no brained, extra RAM and will overclock to be faster.

just wouldn't spend the money now to SLI 2GB cards it's probably not worth it, stick with one for a while longer

Looking at some reviews and sites, I would say if the voltage is unlocked you should get 1100 on the core and thats being conservative. However I never owned one so not talking from experience
