So a few weeks ago I suffered a HDD failure in my 10TB RAID 5 array. That issue has now been resolved but the following symptoms have remained:

1. File transfers are only going mid-speed and tend to hang at the end for a little while
2. The MegaRAID interface takes a while to connect to the Perc card
3. On boot, the MegaRAID interface screams hell about the fact the Perc card's battery has apparently failed

The weird thing is though, when you actually look in the log, although the battery does indeed have issues on startup, it then proceeds to charge fully up and have no issues whatsoever later on?

Looking at it now, MegaRAID says the batter state is "Optimal" with a charge of 77% (has been on for weeks - is it normal for it to not be 100%?).

Should I replace the BBU, or would I be wasting money?

Replace it. Batteries going on raid cards are a common thing. Fitting a new one will make the issue go away.

I guess this is a home storage server?

From a quick look a new battery was £40-£50. If it was a critical server then without a doubt I would replace, but for home only you can decide whether it is worth it (downside if battery is failed - write cache will be switched off so lower performance or becomes unsafe if left on, no raid migration without battery usually, rebuild if another disk fails will likely take longer)

Yes it is a home server so data is not of utmost importance (important bits are backed up elsewhere).
