Gibson les Paul?

You need PRS 513 for your collection Ray. :)

May be, the 513 has been on the radar, as too the 408, and Brent Mason sig but after owning the Custom 22 Special I will have to think hard since the reason I chose to part-ex the custom 22 was because it has too many options. It has 2 humbuckers, with a middle single coil, 5 way switch and coil tap. Meaning there was 10 sounds on tap, I found it a little too complicated.

I may live to regret trading that, may be not but I guess if I want all that options again there are plenty of 513 out there (same pickups as the 305).

You said you found the one in the soulless simulator of a guitar with electronics that make it sound like an acoustic! :p

And I remember you being caught out when I posted sound bites of my 3 Martin acoustics :D
The thing is I actually perform on stage and I need to get from one sound to another very quickly and if the Tyler is good enough for Steve Howe from Yes to use on stage then I'm not arguing.
How the hell do I get from playing an acoustic to a Gibson heavy sound while singing without cheating a bit?
If I was just sitting in a bedroom or playing with one sound on stage then I'd go back to 'names' however the JTVs are the best guitars I've ever played in 45 years of gigging and suit my hands perfectly plus the sounds from the normal pickups are superb. In the house I only ever play them as normal guitars and never turn the electronics on although one of them has got a Roland Synthesizer pickup on it plugged into a Roland GR2 - now that is weird.

There is a thread on another forum where someone made a recording of 4 Les Paul (from standard to Historic reissues to traditional etc) and one PRS 245. 5 clips from 5 guitars and you vote which one you like the tone best. The thread had a simple poll, 6 options, 6th being you think they all sounds the same.

The thing is that he told people it was 5 different Les Pauls and when the voting ended, like 250 votes later. The PRS has the most votes by a clear margin, around 80, with the other 4 Les Pauls sharing the votes very evenly around 20-30 each.

The PRS clearly won in a blind test....then some of the people started came back to make excuses saying his playing isn't consistent etc. Gibson fan boys and their sour grapes tbh.

I own an Epiphone LP which I've played for over 15 years. IN my opinion it's better than any Gibson LP I've played. It weighs a tonne and has a better feel to any Gibson LP I've played.
I'd much rather have a guitar I love playing to death for £500 than a collection of guitars which would mean me remortgaging my house.
However Raymond, you have a beautiful collection and good taste!!

Owning a guitar for 15 years is like an old shoe, it's hard to find something that fits you as well after that long. It's not really about better, it's about what you prefer.

I see no point in owning say 4 PRS!

At least my collection covers a lot of bases! :p

I see 3 PRS ? and all different models, pick ups, and scale lengths. You say that like PRS make only 1 model of guitars?

The 305 is a single coil, 25.5", maple neck, alder body. It's like a Strat, but better :p

You have 2 fender and 2 Gibson? I'm sure i see 4 models there but the SG looks like a Strat with 3 single coils, but a set neck.

all to "samey"

Fender Strat American Deluxe...How can a copy be better :p ;)

Fender Tele based on the Broadcaster 1958...collectors edition...Twanglicious

Gibson LP

Gibson SG Single coil Blades

Martin Vintage OM-18

Now post a video of you playing them Ray! :D

Made by the same company is not "samey", all guitars are "samey" since in a band mix it's difficult to tell whether it's a single cut, double cut, set neck, bolt on neck, scale length, type of pick ups, not to mention when you slap on some gain, it all goes out the window.

And no clips, not recording for you anyway :p

What amp are you running Raymond?

Nice collection by the way although I must confess I've never personally seen the appeal of PRS from a playability point of view but I can't deny they look nice.

I must agree with Jonesiani - I'm with you on that, I wouldn't trade certain guitars for anything and it's so nice to be able to just pick up a guitar and it's so familiar in feel, tone and is almost no effort to play. I find that with my Strat, although I hardly ever play it these days but it's just a lovely instrument to use and particularly good to practice complicated pieces on.

Surely it's ultimately down to whatever sound we are after? I'm sure most guitarists have been guilty of buying on impulse, only to find that it didn't quite 'do' what you bought it for. I've lost count about that with pedals - taken me years to find the right gear.

A yamaha THR10?

I'm kidding! Although that's a great amp, even runs on batteries. This is my proper amp.

:O

I've been playing guitar since around 1996 and I'd have no idea what to do with all those pedals!

Raymond it looks like you have a taste for high-end gear. Would you ever consider a cheaper model (£300-600 for example?) how long have you been playing?
I had a friend who spent £3000 on a PRS and basically played Wonderwall and took photos of it, I was speechless. But at the end of the day I guess it's whatever makes you happy.
I spent 5 years gigging around the UK and Europe, with one pedal and a Marshall combo, I just can't get my head round anyone having loads of gear and not using them to death :)

The board don't really leave the house (it is quite heavy) and if I were touring, I wouldn't take that either, probably a tuner, 1 boost pedal, a delay and perhaps a looper and that's it and get all the gain from the amp. The rest of it just for fun really.

Actually, I would consider a £300-600 guitar, as long as it feels good, I know someone who scored a really nice telecaster for £300 not long ago, there are lots of small luthiers who makes great guitars for good price, less than what Fender charges, and I would argue that paying £3k for a bolt on guitar is utter madness....the whole concept of Fender was to make guitar making cheap, easy and can be put together by people who can't tell the difference between the bridge to the neck in a guitar. It is guitar building for dummies, so when I see "Masterbuilt" and when you hear John Suhr say in a video that they are still all CNC made, you wonder what part of the guitar is "master" built.

I am actually thinking about getting a £50 telecaster kit from Thomann to learn about how to putting it together, how to wire pots, pickups etc. If I make a mistake it'll only be £50, not £2k.

I know some of you see the gear and think they are expensive, and some thinks they must be good because they are expensive. The fact of the matter is there are £3k PRS that just doesn't have "it", Easyrider would say all PRS guitars don't have "it", just as there are lots of Gibsons that doesn't have it. It's not a guarantee that just because the guitar is expensive or limited edition that it is good, it doesn't work like that. I think the Custom 22 Special that I traded doesn't have "it", some people would disagree, hence I traded for the Les Paul, which I knew had it when I hit a chord in the shop. Each piece of wood is different, and the tree doesn't know what price tag you put on it so in a way money is not a measurement of how any guitar feel and sounds. What you are buying essentially is the quality of workmanship, labour costs in the USA vs Asia, quality of hardware and lets not forget, the name on the headstock.

I've just seen your rig over on TGP in the neat pedal board thread Raymond lol

Looks really nice mate.

Blackvault

Cheers :)

Bit close to the bone with ol Raymondo dude :p

Swap Wonderwall with Love Story and you are almost there :p

I see it as whatever makes me happy. I could've bought a Rolex instead but I chose this instead, there is no law that requires me to be like Gilmore to buy any pedals, I don't care if people don't know how to take a camera who go out and buy a Leica. It doesn't bother me one bit, I don't ask to see their photos either. Does it matter whether I am mozart of rock or just noodling in my bedroom? :)

I know Easyrider keep asking for clips and besides trying to find out how good i am, I don't see the point of it. I don't think one needs to justify ownership of any musical gear with skill. There is no qualifications requirement for ownership. I am also not one of those who just look at them, I play them all the time sitting not the sofa, I let my friends play them too.
