So some workmen have turned up this morning and dug a hole (3x3 feet approx) less than 3 feet away from the front door.

They've left this hole surrounded by barriers and upon contacting the council, they do not intend to finish work until the 16th (which amounts to wiring up a street light, which surely is a days work at best, not a week).

Is there no law to invoke here to get this resolved, or do they really expect people to put up with having to step sideways off their doorstep while they waste money dragging out such a job? Are they within their rights to leave a hole so close to someone's front door?! :o

Perfectly reasonable, most probably won't be the council making the electrical connections.
The New Roads and Streetworks Act, and The Traffic Management Act cover openings in the highway, and disruption and coordination of street works respectively if you're interested, but it's not as simple as you think.

You shouldn't have contacted the council. What you should've done is wait until it's dark, move the barriers, walk out of your door and fall into said hole. Then you put a claim in and say that as you were leaving your house someone shouted something at you from inside and, because you turned to look, you didn't see the hole.

Easy money.

phone Virgin Media and tell them someone is trying to steal their cable?

phone Police and tell them you have seen some 'Asian' looking men with beards planting IED's?

Suck it up for a few days :p

Heck, you could step over a 3ft hole.

Photos of this inconvenience are required so we can scoff at your (likely) inaccurate measurements and point out you have loads of space between front door and said hole.

Does your door open out onto a road rather than your property?

Even if he lived in a terrace that has a front directly on the pavement the door would open inwards. Thus it isn't an inconvenience at all. Open door step out onto pavement easily avoiding hole.

First world problems and all that.
